Dragon Fruit
Advantages: Very different Disadvantages: Very expensive
The Dragon Fruit
When doing my shopping I like to try and buy new products for my daughter to taste. Whilst in Lidl about a year ago I stumbled across something very different looking, a bright pink round thing called a dragon fruit. Curious I purchased one and it cost me £1.49. It looks unlike any fruit I have ever seen before. It is bright pink with a sort of pineapple looking skin. The inside of the fruit is completely different to the outside ... ...are there three types of dragon fruit-
Hylocereus undatus- which is the one I had, pink skin and white flesh
Hylocereus polyrhizus- which has pink skin but with red flesh
And
Selenicereus megalanthus- yellow skin with white flesh
The fruit grows on a cactus and generally grows in countries such as Mexico, America, South East Asia and Vietnam
The dragon fruit is low in calories and fat and high in Vitamin C and antioxidants
Overall-
This was ...

OK but not for chipping.
Advantages: Nice flavour. Disadvantages: Overpriced, poor for chipping
...the basket when I noticed Rooster were half-price at 99p. "Hmm" I said "I will give them one more go" Sadly though yet again they have proven to not be as good an all-rounder as they are made out to be. They make lovely jacket spuds but then do so many of the cheaper varieties and as to chip making, sorry but they are only half-way up to the standard of KE or MP. OK spuds but not at the usual price. ...

You say po-tay-toe and I say po-ta-toe.
Advantages: Inexpensive, nutritious and versatile Disadvantages: Too many deep fried ones are NOT good for you.
...Like Potatoes; and Twice Baked Potatoes are films that were considered critical flops in their day, but deserve a second look. VERY BRIEF HISTORY
The Potato originated in the Andes of South America, 8000 years ago. It was around 6,000 years ago that Inca Indians in Peru first cultivated them. The Peruvian Quechua language records more than 1,000 words to describe potatoes and potato varieties! The potato was believed to have medicinal qualities ... ...for cheap, energy-rich, non-cereal foods. Potatoes went on to become the basis for many peoples' essential nutrition around the world. When a fungus destroyed the potato crop in Ireland in 1845 the death toll of the infamous Irish Potato Famine was gigantic. Potatoes are still making history. In October 1995 the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space! NASA called in top boffins to help them develop super-nutritious and versatile spuds ...

I'm a cheat!
Advantages: Roast potatoes without basting Disadvantages: Don't taste as good as home made roast potatoes
...yet I confess I bought Aunt Bessie's Homestyle Roast Potatoes. There I've said it! I had seen these in the freezer but not given then more than a cursory glance, whoever buys frozen roast potatoes.
Well I confess I did both for Christmas 2007 and again for last year as they were actually not bad and so easy to cook. We had been discussing convenience foods when driving to judge at a show and one of the ladies said she bought them. As she is a farmers ... ...it doesn't tell me what Aunt Bessie uses. I am aware of the taste on the coating, and it isn't like the outside of a roast potato, some people may like it better this way.
Will I buy them again?
I've bought them twice for Christmas, just to make it easier for myself, but really I do prefer my own Roast potatoes, so next year I think Auntie Bessie's potatoes may stay in the supermarket freezer.
Cost?
Now £1.86 a bag although I got mine on offer ...

Don't go bananas - eat bananas!
Advantages: Ability to choose ripeness, useful, versatile, cheap Disadvantages: None
As with my other fruit and vegetable reviews, these are a firm favourite of my 3 year old daughter. I used to have bananas on the side board in a bowl so she could help herself - I have, however, had to move them to my veg basket which is out of reach in the kitchen because she would just munch her way through the lot!
I choose to buy tesco's loose bananas as I can chose the ripeness, size and number that I buy. I tend to buy a mixture of ripe and ... ...If you buy prepacked they all tend to be at the same stage of ripeness thus meaning that you have the whole pack that need eating all at once. Not that my little girl would have a problem with that!!!
They are a great fruit to use for a child's lunch box as they are ready wrapped (in their own skin). As with my other reviews I use these as an alternative to sweets for my little girl. She now actually chooses fruit over sweets most of the time.
