Volume 16: The true essence of Fruits Basket?

Advantages: Stunning artwork, expressions perfect as usual, many characters' plotlines developed, no filler chapters.
Disadvantages: Deviation from main plot line, lack of background detail, little of Tohru the heroin,

Fruits Basket: 16 - A cut above the rest? Plot Yet another stunning volume in the Fruits Basket series, volume 16 opens in the familiar Sohma household, before plunging straight into Kyoko's past. [Kyoko being Tohru's mother.] Here we meet the long awaited Katsuya! And he's just as pretty as all the fan-girls out there wanted him to be. Well worth the four chapters it occupies, we follow a tragic tale recounting the events prior to Tohru's birth. Kyoko and Katsuya's love story is full of romance, angst and still manages to bring a smile to your face at times. However at its most heartwrenching it rivals Hatori's past, revealed back in volume 2. It even managed to have me in tears [which takes a lot, although I will always have a soft spot for Fruits Basket]. Following this, its back to the present, where we catch ...

Review of Fruits Basket: Vol 16 (Fruits Basket) - Natsuki Takaya

Beyond Mere Entertainment

Advantages: gently thought provoking, yet affirming, entertainment
Disadvantages: I think the age recommendation is a bit off

I have to hold up my hand here and admit I have loved anime and manga now for well over 20 years. It's not something I am ashamed of by any means, but I think I should mention the fact in passing as it then follows that over the course of twenty odd years, I have read manga that ranged all the way from the sub par to the rare shining example of pure genius. Fruits Baskets is one manga that I can wholeheartedly recommend to both male and female readers, as it transcends its shoujo origins and goes fearlessly where few others have dared to go. More than a coming of age tale, the series is more what could be termed slice of life, spanning a group of young people's lives as they come of age and right family transgressions based on prejudice. It says the manga is aimed at ages 13 and up, and you might be forgiven for thinking this is all ...

Review of Fruits Basket Vol. 1 - Natsuki Takaya

don't get put off by the title!

Advantages: everything
Disadvantages: nothing!

i started reading this around two years ago when my friend recommended it to me and as soon as i started i couldn't put it down. i was so grasped by the book i forget everything that was happening around me and i remeber just how happy i was whilst i was in my fruits basket obsession. it really does make your day happier and makes life seem so much more jollier. me personally, i really had an urge to just go to the middle of nowhere, lie down and read fruits basket, especailly to Hyde Park! (random, i know)! you follow the life of Tohru Honda and you literally see her life expand as she goes to live with the Sohma family. she learns that they each have different 'characters' within them in the form of an animal of the chiese zodiac. the story is so cleverly written within the chiese zodiac story and you see how Tohru's new relationship ...
