Following a recent new cut from my brilliant hairdresser, I was left with little option but to return to the horrible world of hair styling. Frankly, I've been there and done it all, tried everything under the sun (except TIGI and American Crew) and never found anything that I've liked. However, if there's one thing I've learnt, it's that you get what you pay for and although Fudge is expensive, it's well worth your money.
My new cut is long, streaky blonde and it looks really great except for one thing, managability. My hairdresser told me I'd need to get used to heat styling to keep it sleek and dry so the colour would actually be the same as when I left the salon but being a bloke, this became quite difficult and I ended up returning to styling tools to help me achieve that desired look. (Incidently, I burnt my hair to the root and now its
damaged beyond belief. How you women do this, I have no freaking idea).
Anyways, after spending a fortune in the space of two weeks on various styling products, I was about to give up before I remembered the very favourable Fudge Op's I'd been reading on Ciao a month or so ago, and I thought I'd give it a shot. What I really wanted was a mini sample tub because this stuff is expensive ranging between £7 and £10 for most products, and I eventually managed to find some at a website called Hairtec.com (I wouldn't bother trying to find this stuff on the high street by the way, I haven't even come across any salons that sell it). The small tubs of each product were about £2.90 each and can be bought with postage and packaging for £2.00 (with an extra 50p for each product), but the website also sells everything else in the Fudge range, along with TIGI, American Crew and other top brand name items.
So, after having a good look through the items, I decided to choose three small tubs including the Hair Shaper (generally the most popular), the Licourice and the Hair Varnish. They arrived two days later in a nice little plastic handbag type thing including a brochure of all Fudge products available to purchase. The total cost came to about £12.
Ok, so let's get to the crunch. I tried the HairShaper first, which has a hold factor of 2 (1 being the highest), and is designed to scrunch, mould, slick and style. Immediately you will be amazed by the smell which is basically, well like Fudge. It smells great but don't be surprised if people think you smell like you've been rubbing sugar into your hair (although thankfully, no insects have as yet attacked me). The stuff itself looks like a gooey caramel and feels pretty sticky in your hair and hands but I've found if you use only a small amount, it's very effective for maintaining a dry but controlled look. It's quite amazing stuff actually, I've been well impressed since I started using it as most wax/cream will make your hair greasy and dull, which this certainly does not. I imagine it would be fantastic for a shorter, more defined and moulded style but with a dry look as the objective.
Next one, Licourice. Again, I'm guessing this is called Licourice because that's what it smells of and again, it's very pleasant (though if you don't like licourice, you might disagree naturally). It's a hold factor of 4 (light) and has a thin cream consistency designed with natural oils for texture, control and superior shine. Again, if you use a small amount, this stuff is very impressive but doesn't have the control of the Shaper. It's more suited to longer hair I would say giving it more freedom and movement but still maintaining an easy to style feel. This is probably my personal favourite of the three (but if you have shorter hair, I would recommend the Shaper).
Finally, the Varnish, designed to create polished, smooth and sleek hair. This stuff smells similar to the Shaper but not as sweet and is a number 4 hold (light, but it actually works more like a number 2 giving you a lot of control). It has more of a wax consitency and actually works like a varnish giving you a glazed look. It's great for a particularly sleek and shiny style and is probably what I would use on a night out where I want a stronger and more compact hold.
Conclusions. This is impressive stuff, what more can I say. The most important thing to note is that these products seem to maintain control without making your hair dull and greasy, which is the let down of every wax and cream I've tried. It also only requires a small amount and smells great, what more can you ask for. I'm definately going to give some of the other Fudge products a shot too and see what the range in general is like. Overall, I'd definately recommend this to everyone, give it a shot at least and you'll see why I'm so keen on this stuff.
And for all you men, just because your hair smells like it's been covered in caramel, this doesn't make you any less of a man. Although in fairness, maybe it's the ladies who should be answering this question. Any offers?
