Of course I then have to go on to explain to my bemused friend that fudge is actually the name of the styling wax I use to achieve not only the best 'spiked' hair this side of an episode of Buffy, but also the most delicious smelling hair outside of a Rowntrees factory.
Smell is one of the most powerful, evocative senses which can elicit all kinds of emotions, from revulsion to a state of olfactoral ecstasy, and Fudge Hair Shaper is definitely on the latter end of that scale. This stuff has a sweet, strawberry, fudgish aroma that's truly unique and dangerously addictive.
So wonderful is the aroma that floats from the little orange tub each time I open it's slivery lid - that after nearly 6 years of daily use I STILL get a buzz whenever I smell it. In the same way that
you can never get over the mouthwatering scent of a roast dinner, or the slightest waft of your girlfriends perfume... Fudge makes you smell as good as you look - every time, and notta lotta hair products can boast that!
Ok, ok, enough about how it smells, does it actually do the job it's supposed to do? I hear you cry.
I'm happy to report that the definitive answer is yes, it certainly does. After you've gotten over the heavenly smell, the first thing you notice about this product is it's wonderfully gooey nature. This immediately separates it from many other hair waxes and convinces you that this is an altogether more 'fudgy' affair.
For short hair a small pea-sized scoop rubbed over the tips of your fingers or the palm of your hand and applied by pushing your fingers through your hair is sufficient to hold almost any style for the remainder of the day. If your hair is completely dry the fudge 'sticks' incredibly fast so that you can hardly get your fingers through it, so by wetting your hair ever so slightly first you get an easier application. For longer hair just use a little more, but you will still get an equally adequate hold.
Fudge hair shaper is stated as being 'Firm factor 2' - the second strongest hold in the range. And it certainly lives up to this claim. But what makes Fudge unique in my experience is how it holds the hair. Once it's applied it becomes invisible, with no tell tale shine or residue. Your hair simply looks like it grew that way! The hold is firm but flexible, so if you touch it you won't cut your fingers, it'll simply spring back into shape, which means that one application will last all day. It really does enable you to 'shape' your hair in ways that other products don't.
And apart from smelling divine your hair feels and looks quite natural, and no matter how hard you rub your head there's no flaking whatsoever. This stuff is the silent assassin of hair products, doing it's job effectively and disappearing without trace.
It also washes out very easily with a single shampoo application. However if during the day you want to restyle your hair, simply wetting it again will reactivate the fudge and allow an easy restyle without having to add more of the product. Likewise if you happen to go to bed without washing your hair you won't wake up on a pillow of snowflakes.
“Where can I get this amazing product and how much will it cost me?” I hear you ask in earnest.
Well, here's the difficult bit. Like all quality products it's hard to come by and it'll cost you an arm and a leg (not literally - that would be hideous). The trouble is that it's not currently available in high street retailers like Boots or Superdrug, so you have to scour the trendy hairdressers shelves for that telltale orange packaging. Once you've found it be prepared to part with notes rather than coins. A large 100g tub will set you back £9-10, but will last you around 6 months of daily use, which for the best product in it's range, seems like good value to me. Although it can be a bit of shock if you're used to paying under a fiver for your hair gunk.
You can also buy a smaller, travel size tub (25g) for around £3.50 which is a good way to try out the product for the first time, and surprisingly makes for a good travel companion.
According to 'diamondbeauty.com' celebrity users of Fudge hair products include Kevin Bacon and Janet Jackson, what this tells us about Fudge products I'm not quite sure but I guess some might find that reassuring.
In terms of similar priced competition I've also used 'American Crew Fibre' (which retails at about £9 per 100g) and found it to be no competition with the Fudge Hair Shaper, feeling too sticky and not holding it’s shape for anywhere near long enough.
I really can't fault this product because even the price reflects good value when you realise how much mileage you get out of a single tub. And although it's hard to find, you'll only be looking twice a year, so turn it into an adventure!
