This was my first digital camera purchase, so I trailed all the web sites for information on what would suit me most. I'm so glad I did all the spade work first. I've had this camera now for about 2 years, along with the additional media card (64Meg), carry case, re-chargeable batteries and charger it cost me a total of £315. A Bargain at the time. But take a look at what you can get for that price now. The quality of picture this camera takes astounded me, my family and friends, so much so they have now all ditched their old cameras and gone out to buy new digital ones. You can actually save yourself money using these camers, as you no longer pay for poor quality or bad photos, you simply delete them before processing.
This is what you pay for: A 2.0 Mpixel Fuji FinePix 2800 Zoom camera 16MB SmartMedia card 4 AA-sized alkaline batteries (non-rechargeable) Shoulder strap Lens cap which straps to shoulder strap when not in use. USB cable CD-ROM featuring FinePix Viewer Software and drivers A 95 page manual plus software manual (printed)
Here's a bit of the Technical jargon: Max resolution: 1600 x 1200 Zoom capability: 6X optical + 2.5X digital Focal length 38mm - 228mm Automatic Focus: Yes and it's all that I use LCD display: 1.8" screen Built-in flash: Yes Movie mode (format): Yes but only in 1 minute blasts Sound recording: Yes Storage method: SmartMedia (16MB card included but not quite big enough for the 2 week holiday snaps.) USB support: Yes, just plug it in, turn it on and your almost there. Batteries used: AA (4) (buy re-chargeable and charger, it will work out cheaper in the long run. Size: 3.7" x 3.0" x 2.8" Software: Fuji FinePixViewer
Some additional benefits I did not expect of the Camera: If you have a MS Windows PC this camera can also be used as a Web Cam, for communicating on the Internet. The picture application starts right up. The camera is also WindowsXP compatible. The manuals for the camera are very good, giving you all the help and information you'll need. The Camera is an all-plastic one, but that does not effect it's looks., and I'd rate it above average in terms of robustness. Because it's plastic, it's fairly light, but it's a bit too big for your jacket pocket.
Some things I hoped for but didn't get: Fuji's software is pretty basic, and only useful for transferring, rotating, and resizing images. You might want a more powerful photo editing suite if you need more than those features. There aren't any lenses, filters, or flashes available for this point-and-shoot camera.
In Summary: There aren't a lot of buttons and everything is easy to use. The 1.8" LCD is good-sized, but can be too dark in poor light. There are many choices available for resolution and quality on the camera, from the choice of using 2Mpixel photo's in "Fine, Normal or Basic" mode. Dropping down to 1Mpixel and eventually to VGA which is great for sending photos attached to e-mails to friends and the like. For those looking for a lot of zoom for a little money, the FinePix 2800 Zoom is an excellent choice. It offers a 6X optical zoom, very good photo quality.
