I'd like to assume that you are in the same position as I was. You crave an easy to use camera offering professional results without the professional price tag. You desire excellent image quality. You long to advance your skills without being baffled by confusing buttons, options and bewildering prompts. If this is you then you should look no further than the A500. Read on to find out my experiences and views on this camera.
The new entry level digital camera from Fujifilm was a clear winner for me in my research into a good quality point and shoot stills camera. After owning the Fujifilm A200s (see my reviews) I decided it was time to upgrade as my needs, as well as my skills had advanced. The 2 mega pixels of the A200 was no longer sufficient to print good quality images, was considerably bulky and could no longer really be considered a "compact camera". The A500 was the answer to my search providing a 5.1 mega pixel sensor allowing me to print large scale, as well as offering both a 1.8 LCD, a 3 times optical zoom and a range of scene modes. However, unlike previous beginner models it also offers a degree of manual control such as settings for film sensitivity (ISO), white balance and exposure compensation - this was key to my search. The included internal memory of 12 mega bytes allows the user to take pictures out of the box however it is strongly recommend that you buy at least a 128MB XD card when you purchase the camera to get the full benefits. If not, you'll soon find that the camera will only store a couple of photos on the max resolution.
The camera, at the time of purchase cost around £140 from a well known high street retailer but do your research and I'm sure you could find this model for the all important sub 100 pounds mark. Don't let this put you off - the camera certainly doesn't look or feel cheap. The compact silver chassis combines Fuji films Super CCD technology (a first in any budget camera) to provide realistic skin tones, beautiful sky's and accurate representation of fine details and most importantly true to life colours. I for one seen the benefits from this alone, portrait shots were smooth and skin tones were excellent. Another feature is the good macro mode which will allow you to focus as close as 10cm to your subject. Be wary of trying to go in any further though as the Auto Focus system (used by simply half pressing the shutter to focus on your subject) will fail to focus properly.
Opening the box you'll find everything you need to get started. The camera, batteries, usb cable, software, excellent instruction manual (although you wont really need it - the camera is so simple to use - just point and shoot!), your warranty and a handy wrist strap. Unlike previous models there is no memory card included but instead internal memory to get you up and running. The box is small and compact, but everything you will need to get started with your new camera is their.
Getting ready to take your first picture is simple. Simply insert the included batteries into their compartment and your memory card if you decided to purchase one. The next step is to press the power on button which will greet you with the "finepix" logo and then launches straight into the first time set up screen. All you have to do here is enter the date and time which is done by using the left and right buttons. From here you are ready to take your first photo, which is already set up for auto mode. After the first time set up the camera should boot up and be ready for the first photo within 3 seconds - a really bonus for a compact in this price bracket.
Beginners and advanced users alike will love just how easy composition is on the A500. Simply press the "display" button to produce a grid on screen. This grid is known as the "rule of thirds" and will allow the user to perfectly compose shots - this is especially great when capturing landscapes. When using this mode simply ensure that your main object (such as a person) is on the intercept of two lines. Half press your shutter to lock the focus and then full press to capture your first shot - perfectly composed!
The auto focus can be weak in low lighting though so you should make sure that the Auto focus warning doesn't appear on screen (a red AF sign) . If focusing has failed try and focus on a light area of the image is my only suggestion.
Downloading the images is simple. Firstly install the supplied the software and then connect the USB cable to your computer. Downloading is simple and fast. Once on your computer the supplied software will allow you to view your images and perform basic editing tasks with simplicity. Maximise your image to full size and you will see the sheer quality of the photos every detail: a spec of dust, a single hair - the quality is outstanding. You just cant go wrong with the image quality.
You will notice that the supplied batteries don't last too long. This is a downfall with many otherwise excellent digital cameras and this one is no exception. If your going out for a day be sure to take a few sets of good quality AA's with you or be on the safe side and purchase rechargeable which will also save you money and help the environment too. I cant quote exactly, but with constant use on NIMH rechargeable I think you will get at least 100 images with the LCD on.
We all know how difficult it can be to capture sports, landscapes, portraits and night time shots. The A500 will help you along with its pre-defined modes for these shots. Up the ISO to 400 and you can capture some excellent sporting shots. However we spent the day at Fort William for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup where I got some excellent fast moving shots - but at high speeds the camera will show a degree of motion blur. Night Mode will slow down the shutter speed so a tripod is essential, which can be purchased cheaply on the high street or in specialist camera shops.
Video recording is available but don't expect much from it. The frames per second is quite low and there is no sound so the video is quite poor. Don't let this put you down - its not a video camera it is a stills camera and it certainly excels in this. If you do want to record video, you can record up to 60 seconds per clip.
Conclusion
This is an excellent camera providing pure simplicity and excellent image quality. The camera provides sound value for money and I don't think you'll be disappointed. The only downfall I can find is the auto-focusing. It can struggle in low light but other than this I have took many great quality images and have took a good 300 images on this camera in the last month all with great quality.
The other thing I would say is that you should also buy the following accessories to get the most out of the camera:
Rechargeable batteries 128 megabyte XD card at least Case.

...shops I plumped for the FUJIFILM FINEPIX A500. It has to be said I bought this mainly due to the price; I got it for £51.99 at Jessops (for my tiny student budget that seemed perfect!) Added to this I bought the accompanying printer which was in an offer, so the camera price seemed much more attractive. Though the camera is small but perfectly formed it took me a while to decide whether I actually liked it or not, lets just say it takes a VERY long ... ...perfect size, just over 8cm diameter, and a good shape for a handbag. It is a clear winner for any beginner, as I had never used a digital camera before but found this simple to understand. It has to be said that it comes with one of the thickest manuals I have ever seen- not that you need to read it because the workings of the camera are pretty self explanatory. ...the chance to buy the Fujifilm FinePix A500 digital camera for £49.99 with the added assurance that if I wasn’t completely satisfied I could return it immediately for a refund I would have been a fool not be rip the customer service advisers hand off, which I actually did. I wasn’t in the market for a new camera and was just browsing but this opportunity just seemed too good to be missed. What is my brief conclusion after using it for some months ... ...It was a steal and if I had to replace it now I would happily pay in excess of £100 for the same model it is that good.
Despite not being the best looking model on the market the FinePix A500 shouts out functionality rather style being both compact in size (dimensions and specifications can be located at the end of this review), lightweight even with the batteries in place and so easy to use that a trained chimp could install the software, use the ...

I am extremely pleased with my Fujifilm digital camera. It is easy to use and downloading the pictures on to the computer is simple too. The quality of the pictures is very good. Because it is small and compact, I usually have it with me whenever I go out - thus am able to snap those special moments that previously always happened when I didn't have a camera with me.

I purchased my fujifilm finepix A500 (5.1 megapixels) from asda early 2007 i wanted a good camera for a small price id just given birth to my youngest daughter and wanted quality pictures for the album and to put on my pc, i paid £69.99 it was on sale at the time and it did not include a memory card.

If you want a basic and simple point and shoot digital camera then this is an ideal choice. The picture quality is very good. It is small and light and can fit into your pocket. Ideal for travelling and nights out. Takes 2 AA batteries so you do not have to worry too much about recharging as you can just buy batteries in the shops if you run out.
This neat little camera uses XD memory cards. There are the usual various shooting modes such as portrait, ... ...if you are feeling a bit more experimental. There is also a handy self timer to get yourself in the shot.
The A500 also has a record movie mode to capture those special moments. Just make sure you have sufficient memory space as this uses up more memory.
Uploading your pictures is very simple, just plug into your pc's USB socket. ...
