Having 'done' photography since 1993 and being a serial camera changer I've lost count of the camera's I've owned. One thing that most photographers do is take a back-up camera and quite often this is a digital compact. This is the camera I chose as my backup and below is why:
This Fuji continues a fine tradition of small, portable camera's. The special chip (HR is the key to look for in a Fuji) ensures that it is one of the best for low light shooting. I could really bore you here with techie stuff about ISO's, how they relate to film speeds and such but I won't.
In a compact which you're likely to take with you everywhere including night's out, parties etc. low light shooting is a real issue and I think Fuji is one company who really takes on the issue well.
Many other camera's will have a horrible grain effect which affects the smoothness and clarity of the image. This grain is called noise by the way. Again I won't bore you with techie stuff.
The other great thing about this camera is the level of control you can have. Besides a ton of scene modes - (Landscape, portrait, museum, party/indoor, fireworks, flower, night, underwater, sports, sunset, beach, natural light, snow, natural light & with flash.) which cover every eventuality there is also virtually full manual control. There is also a movie mode and lots of flash control plus it's fantastic for close up (macro) shots.
If you are knowledgeable about camera's a quick look at the specs will convince you. Things like apeture & shutter priority, custom white balance and spot metering will convince you that when you want total control you can have it.
IN SUMMARY: This is a very well specified camera that will suit any point & shooter, will preserve a family's memories and will satisfy the demanding, knowledgeable enthusiast photographer. It covers both sides equally well. I used mine for professional product shots for small items.
FINALLY: What was the thing that finally swayed it for me, the 'killer application' as they say. Well I don't compromise on the quality of my photographs and it's this camera's quality output that did it for me. But at such a great price! I know of camera's costing nearly a thousand pounds which won't turn out photo's half as good as this. The trade mags show this too.
