I got my Fujifilm s1000fd only a few months ago, due to my s800 breaking i got this discounted. i think it is a great camera for all types of photography or just for quick shots,
I will start with picture quality, and for what is known as a "bridge" camera is gives superb picture quality and sharpness, the highest resolution is way higher than most amateur photographers would need and the levels of detail are surprisingly good, noise is reduced in low light by a staggering 3200 ISO it can shoot as low res at around 2.5 frames per second and at a very high shutter speed of 2000 way outdoing any bridge or point and shoot camera within the price range.
It has a dial on the top of the main body giving you access to all your features, these include Auto, Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter priority and programmable to name a few. it also has some presets built in like Sport and night, although these work well its worth getting to know the advanced features if you want to get the most out of this camera, it also has a fun panorama mode, giving some spectacular wide scenery shots which works very well. The only downside to the features is that it is lacking manual focus, the auto focus is very good at picking up what your pointing at but i would enjoy some manual control over this, The best feature i found with this camera was the Macro and super macro settings, super macro can give you focus as close as 2cm which is amazing, the sharpness of the image in super macro is phenomenal, although it has a 12X optical zoom this is only really useful with a tripod and with no means of optical stabilization i think 12 is going a touch too far.
This cameras menu and interface is quite quick to get used to and the screen is easily big enough to display everything it needs to, sometimes the interface will get in the way of your pictures but you can just hit a button to get rid of all the information whilst still keeping all your settings, this is far better than canons point and shoot interface which was built both for the cameras and the video cameras, because Fuji have thought this one out it is easily worth 5*
whilst using this camera i have noticed one thing that stands out, It is built like a tank, although no shock resistance is advertised i have dropped it a fair few times (sometimes onto particularly hard surfaces) and it has maintained its scratch free body, with what seems to be a metal and rubber case it is held together and feels very durable compared to many compact cameras on the market which feel unbearably light. its finish is professional and is held together as if it is military equipment.
The look and design of the camera is very good, although its very plain it isn't made to be the most stylish camera out there. its functions are all in the right place and the camera can be operated with one hand but i wouldn't advise it. the Electronic viewfinder has good clarity but could do with an eye rest, and when your using the electronic viewfinder your hair and head may get in the way of the buttons, this can be frustrating but this is not the reason it hasn't achieved 5 stars for Overall look an design. Although being advertised as the worlds most compact bridge camera i insist on disagreeing, the camera (when operating) has to have a large protruding lens, which can be very annoying, the moving lens part is of worse build quality and seems a touch to flimsy. my previous camera the s800 had 10X optical zoom and still had a fixed lenses, which gave me the opportunity to add lenses and polarizers, as i now have this my filters are deemed useless which is a bit of a pain.
Value for money in my opinion is better than anything else on this camera, the quality of the camera is very high standard and any other camera with such quality would easily cost double the price shown here. i highly recommend this camera for any amateur photographers or anyone looking for a slightly more advanced camera.
