The Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd is an excellent 'bridge' camera for those wishing to move up from the traditional compact type.
Whilst lacking in some of the features you find on the more expensive Digital SLRs, this camera produces excellent quality photographs at A4 print quality, and extremely easily too in automatic mode and when using the excellent face detection mode.
With this money you are never going to get the flexibility of cameras such as the Canon EOS 400D with its interchangeable lenses, optional flash guns and remote shutter releases, however what you do get is an integrated, and capable, Fujizon 28-300m lens with 2x digital zoom, producing high quality 6.3M pixel photographs for a fraction of the price of DSLRs.
Another plus is the camera's ability to take outstanding full-frame video at 640x480 resolution - an extremely handy facility for those moments when only video will do!
The camera, although not as heavy as true DSLRs, is well built and sturdy. Having dropped mine twice and breaking into a sweat both times thinking that it could never have survived the ordeal, the camera was soon up and running again with only a re-seat of the memory card and re-fitting of the batteries to be done.
The flash unit is limited by being fixed to the camera, however it appears to do a good job and can be manually adjusted to give greater or lesser luminosity according to the situation.
The lens cap is easy to operate with one hand, and nicely attached to the case via a cord. The included carrying strap is also well designed and does the job well. The lens hood, included as standard, is also very useful in bright light situations.
Battery life is good if you buy, as I did, 2500mAh Ni-MH rechargeable types, and the free Exif Launcher and FinePix Viewer software makes downloading and manipulating images on your PC extremely straightforward.
Options for connecting the camera to a PC or television are excellent with a free USB cable included in the box and a digital video socket to hand.
On the base of the camera is a standard tripod screw thread. External power comes by way of a 5v input socket for static tripod or PC use (power supply not included).
Although the camera comes with 10MB of internal memory, I would recommend that a large capacity, High-Speed xD card is used (I recommend Olympus H-rated cards) - see the Fujifilm website however as not all xD cards are compatible (address at the bottom of the review).
Downsides are the lack of RAW software compatibility - realistically limiting you to JPEG manipulation even with Adobe Photoshop CS2, the small two-finger grip for the right hand, the awkward battery compartment cover which makes loading fiddly and can lead to the batteries popping out at the wrong time, and the manual which could be better written to explain some basic photography techniques - ie when using manual, aperture and shutter priority modes - for those new to this level of camera.
Notwithstanding this, however, the camera is very good and value for money and I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending it.
