Finding the right camera for your picture taking fun can be hard, especially when now-a-days there are so many to choose from. ‘35mm’ is now becoming obsolete, and the digital world is taking over. What ever happened to simplicity? It’s bad enough having to decide what clothes or food to buy why is the digital world so overpowering?
The Camera Storey
I used to own a APS camera with all the useful functions such as flash control, time and date functions, hell the lens even popped out when you switched it on! However, it had served it’s time and decided it had enough of my constant use and didn’t want to take my silly pictures anymore. So rather than going to fix this old camera, although it served me well, I decided to buy a new one.
Lets face it, it’s a lot easier this way!! Or so I thought!!
Shopping
Who invented shopping? All be it great when it come to shoes and clothes for me but when I’m looking for the perfect camera that I don’t need a degree to use, it gives me a headache. I just want to take pictures, send the film to the processors and let them do the hard work!! Is that too much to ask??
Walking into Dixons I thought great they must have what I’m looking for (not the only shop I went to but I won’t bore you with the whole storey). Sure enough they had a huge display waiting for me to touch and play! Woho!!
Just sitting in a lonely spot in the corner was a little blue Fuji film nexia Q1. and at £39.99 it didn’t really break the bank compared to the £100’s - £500’s digital cameras that I saw, even my old APS was well over £100. The Q1 didn’t look bad either, its rounded for style and has an easy to hold side for your picture taking hand! Although not good for left handers! And it came with a battery and a film, so you can start taking pictures straight away.
The features
The film is the usual APS and only takes one at a time, with automatic re-load and rewind when you have finished. Beware the ‘open’ latch is long and thin, and you have to twist it to open. This is bad if you have large fingers because the strap gets in the way, which I suppose is a good thing, cause then you can’t accidentally open the latch while you still have valuable film inside.
If you like you can rewind mid film it has an inverted button for this, you know the kind you have to stick a pen in to activate. But why would you want to?? Unless you are desperate and simply can’t wait for the pictures.
Recommended distance for taking pics is 2ft although I do have a few good close ups of my baby boy!! The picture quality is good for what I paid for, and with an automatic flash and red-eye reduction you can’t really go wrong. I’ve never had a bad picture, I just need to brush up a bit more on my photography skills!
It takes 6 seconds for the flash to recharge, and if you can’t wait that long you must be a busy person. All recommended flash ranges are described in the manual:
Iso 100 0.6 – 2.0m Iso 200 0.6- 3.0m Iso 400 0.6- 4.0m Iso 800 0.9 – 6.0m Using colour film……………….if all this means anything to anyone??!!!
An on/off button doubled up as a lens cover makes life a little easier, this way you can’t forget to turn the camera on otherwise you can’t take pictures and you don’t have to worry about the lens.
The display gives you all the basic information, such as exposure counter, cartridge loaded/unloaded sign and battery capacity sign.
Well I think I covered what you need to know about what the camera can do. But what I haven’t really mentioned are the things it can’t, which for many this can be a major downfall.
There isn’t a clock or time function, and no zoom lens which would make it difficult if you are wanting to take pictures of something far away or simply want a good close up.
Also beware of severe electric shock!!! Ha ha ha ha apparently, as mentioned in the warning section of the manual, this could only happen if the product is dropped or damaged so that the interior is exposed. I just thought that this was quite an important point for you all to know.
Who is this camera for?
It’s for the people out there who love simplicity. No gimmicks, no fuss, no hassle. What it can also be handy for is if you want to take pics on a night out you can just throw it in your hand bag or have it hanging from your neck.
Hope you enjoyed reading and don’t forget to leave a comment for me!! See you all! :)

Sorry, ISO = Film speed.

APS is likely to die way before 35mm, for one thing APS film is smaller (by 56%) meaning that the quality is not as good as 35mm. If you need a small P&S camera, get an Olypmus MJUII, they are cheap and will knock the socks off any digital camera of an equivelent size.
