If you are running your computer on AC power with a battery installed, the adapter charges the battery (if needed) and maintains its charge. When the system is off, the AC adapter will charge the battery and then maintain its charge.

I bought one of these in 2004 for my daughter to take to college. As others have written it ran very hot for her, with frequent crashes. The overheating probably accelerated the hard disk failure (1 year and one week). However, while replacing the disk, I gave the computer a good clean. The air vent grilles (and there are a few) were coated with fluff, like a blanket. Not easy to see, but easy enough to clean, carefully. I am now using the computer for office work, including lightweight CAD, and it's pretty good. I'm looking at upgrading the RAM, and it needs a new battery. I clean it about once a year. I would add that this is not the first overheating laptop I've had. Even HP have this problem. I took to using a couple of long thin pieces of wood, with recesses for the feet. This raised the laptop off the desk by about 6 mm more, just to improve the airflow. It helped. I've also had to replace the feet on the 1840 (it had a hard time with my daughter), and I've used feet which are about 8mm high (cut to shape), which also improves the ventilation. Hope this helps. But, like others, I would never buy another F-S computer.
Advantages: multi-thread, CPU speed, longevity Disadvantages: ATI video card, heat, noise, Windows license
Bought in 2004, this laptop has always been running under Linux (various distributions).
Some major problems : very hot (due to 2.6GHz CPU), may crash sometimes in summer. When computer is hot, network cable connexion stops working. No hardware acceleration after 4 years ! This is due to ATI (now AMD) lack of stable driver release over the past years. Unstable wifi support (BCM card) through ndiswrapper of bcm43xx modules. Batteries are not working ... ...worked (from 2004-2006). Too noisy. Problems to get Windows license reimbursed (lack of cooperation from fujitsu-siemens).
Some good points : multi-threading support. high CPU speed which I used to run several CPU-consuming scientific simulations. The hardware never had serious breakdown (hard disc, monitor) even after several serious crashes due to a very hot cpu temperature (intensive calculations). Robust (lots of travelling around the globe). ...

Advantages: the price Disadvantages: everything else
...No reasonable support from fujitsu allthough they knew this notebook had these problems!
In my comprehension this is no service, or good publicity for fujitsu, SO fujitsu, what are you people going to do about this! I could use some support for spending 2500 euro on your faulty product!!! ...

Quick review of Fujitsu Siemens AMILO D 1840 - P4 3.2 GHz - 15.4" TFT Review ofFujitsu AMILO D 1840by

I have just had mine for over three years and have had nothing but trouble. Thankfully I took out a three year extended warranty, it was well worth it. I have had it in for repairs three times (without it for at least 2 weeks each time) Had two new motherboards, memory, modem card and all the connectors changed at one time or another. The lid of the case also split which they changed the last time in just before the three years ran out. They then also replaced the CPU heatsink and shielding and at the moment it is the best it has been for the whole of the three years plus. Likewise I would not buy Fujitsu Siemens again, No Way.

not too bad its not exactly for gaming or very high performance software its worked fine for me for about 2 years now, yes it does get quite hot but i keep it on side of sofa when in use so its nottoo bad as the ventilation is kept clear, i may get a fan to runn the laptop while closed.
only problem i have is windows vista its always updateing its terrible. <nothing to do with latop.
not too bad i think people are useing it for the wrong reasons.

Bought one of these in 2004, has been generally ok, but recently the overheating and poor battery life has severly tested my patience. DVD writer is very fussy about the brand of DVD used. Now it overheats very easily, waiting for support from Fujitsu, but not hopeful as it so old. Battery pack is too heavy as is the laptop for travelling or long term use on the lap. Spec looked good but have become very disappointed with quality of parts. Recent upgrade to 1gb RAM has helped but overheating is major problem.
Currently looking for a good reason to keep it & spend on replacement parts or use it as a door stop or use as a paving slab in my garden.
