I purchased my laptop while on holiday in Hong Kong in May 2007. I had a number of criteria - light weight, screen smaller than 15", dual core, relatively large storage capacity and good battery life. I was also looking to pay less than 1000 GBP. It should be noted when comparing prices that there are various specifications available for the same basic model, in terms of storage and memory offered. It was recommended that I take the offer of double RAM - which I did. The machine has been far from lightening quick, and with half the RAM I don't know if I could have worked with only half the amount. I have not seen any obvious benefit from the dual core processor.
Of my initial requirements the battery life had been the only real disappointment. There are 3 power settings and whilst the performance does not appear to change greatly, the battery life is drastically reduced in "High Performance" mode. Estimates range from 1-2 hours, certainly no less, but if I recall correctly I should be able to get quite a lot more. If you are concerned, the DVD player can be removed and replaced with an additional battery, but that obviously restricts what you can do with the machine!
My machine came with Windows Vista Home Basic - I was sceptical about this but told it would not crash lots. It did, and after numerous patches it is bearable.
There's a Shock Sensor Utility to let you know if the machine's being handled roughly, but it seems to come on for no reason from time to time and can get a bit distracting.
It has been fine for manipulating pictures and music, internet browsing and some basic office functions. On my travels it has been handy for playing music, burning CDs and viewing DVDS. Sound output is good. I am happy, but not over enthused. Care should be taken of the exact specification, particularly the stability of the operating system you select.
