Advantages Advantages fun, light hearted read with a few scares towards the end

Disadvantages Disadvantages a little bit tame compared to Laymon's usual work

This was the first Richard Laymon novel I ever picked up and ever since then,I have been a fan-addicted to his novels and reading every one at least twice;this one is a paticular favourite-probably simply because it was the first I ever read... Set in the seaside resort of Boleta Bay,the story begins when Jeremy moves to town with his mom and becomes instantly attracted to the Funland Boardwalk which he describes as "small...primitive and pretty darn tacky." Within a couple of days Jeremy has visited the creepy side show museum,JASPER'S ODDITIES-a tribute to the old freak show that had to ... more

Funland by Richard Laymon Richard Laymon was a well-established American Horror Author in Europe and Australia, and only just beginning to gain respect as an author in the United States, before dying in February 2001. He wrote very graphic novels, with an almost anything-goes philosophy. As the Independent wrote 'In Laymon's books, blood doesn't so much drip, drip as explode, splatter and coagulate. Funland is in parts based on true occurrences. Laymon, used to enjoy visiting Santa Cruz with his family and going to old style boardwalk amusement parks. Whilst there he noticed that the place was ... more

Advantages Advantages A real page turner with decent characters and a good story.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You won't get much sleep till it's finished

Being somewhat of a Laymon fan I would recommend to anyone thinking of reading his books - do yourselves a favour and start with this one as I did. The story is set in a creepy run down American seaside town where the local youths get their kicks by beating up and torturing the homeless population which plagues the tourist trade. Lamon's novel follows the new kid in town; Jeremy as he is drawn into the gang of youngsters as they stalk the streets and beaches at night in search of the victims they call trolls, their violence getting more brutal with each attack. This being Lamon of course you ... more

Another great novel by Laymon. A boy named Jeremy moves with his mother to the seedy resort of Boleta Bay and soon makes friends with a group of teenagers. The group gets together late at night to terrorise and humiliate the undesirables of the town. They are known as the trollers and want rid of the bums who are led by the beautiful Tanya whom has personal reasons for revenge. The story is set around Funland which is a run down tacky funfair. Jeremy soon gets involved with the trollers and they become more daring and vicious with every attack on the bums, but with his infatuation with Tanya ... more
