Of all the myriad forms of hardware components the graphics tablet is one of the least known and used and after my recent experiences I now know why this is so.

When I went hunting for a graphics tablet to buy I was staggered by the total lack of choices. In the end after many hours of fruitless searching I finally came across the Nisis range of GT's. Initially I opted for their larger and more expensive product the G6 as I was under the mistaken impression that having a larger work surface would make life just that little bit simpler. When I picked up the GT I was confronted with a box about the same size as an extra large take-out pizza and believe me when I say that the GT took up about 95 % of the dimensions of the box. This automatically caused me a problem as I asn't expecting it to be quite this big however with a little shuffling around on my desk I managed to fit it on ... and by that I mean that about half of it was hanging off the edge of the desk. I would tell you about the installation but after 2 days I had just had enough and took it back for a smaller model ... the G2

" Aaaahhhhhh this is a lot better " I thought to myself as I placed the G2 next to my mouse-mat while simultaneously getting ready to start the installation. After installing the G6 I kinda new what to expect but that didn't mean that I was happy about it. To be honest the drivers for this GT are somewhat lacking in, well, everything.

I wish I could tell you that it installed easily but I would be lying and it wasn't until the fourth attempt that I even managed to get my system to recognise that it existed at all. If that wasn't bad enough the other software that comes with it is just downright pants.

Then came to installing the pen and mouse. Luckily I knew what to expect as I had only just had the G6 and if it wasn't for the fact that my sysytem had already installed them when I had the G6 I was sure that another 30 minutes or more would have been wasted as I tried vainly to get my system to register them on it's radar of reality.

While they are indeed cordless and light I would however say that they are not the easiest thing to use and in the end I could only come to one conclusion ... That my optic mouse was just so much better and that neither the G6 nor the G2 were going to be of benefit to me in anyway, in fact they were more of a hinderence that anything else. While they may look good and you dont have the issue of leads precision is not a word that seems to be in their volcabulary.

Needless to say the G2 went back to the shop within a matter of a couple of days too and I have no intention of buying any other graphics tablet until the technology for them improves drastically.

From my experience, graphics tablets do require a bit of getting used to otherwise you'll find them extremely difficult to work with. I have a cheap corded one but it's been ok for me. I've also used Wacom ones which I must say, after getting used to are great for precision. Much better than my optical mouse, or any other type of mouse. Also, they reduce the risk of RSI. I've found a Wacom one I'll be buying soon but doing some research on it first. But I've learn that this tablet has crummy software from this op so won't even consider buying this brand. Thanks. :)

It's nice to see another late night writer! Haven't seen a graphics tablet in years. What are you using it for, if you don't mind me asking? :o) - Dan.
