It is now a year since I received my beloved GHD hair straightening irons and I would not be without them, however with my straightening irons I got a spray bottle of ghd iron oil and it has been a bit of a disappointment so I decided to review it.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About GHD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many of you will have heard of the name GHD (which stands for ‘good hair day’) in relation to their famous (and rather expensive!) hair straightening irons. In the last two years GHD have become an extremely famous creator of salon-professional products which not only includes their high quality range of hair straighteners but also items like shampoos, conditioners, brushes, various styling products and finishing products. GHD products, especially the hair straighteners are known for being expensive (the hair straighteners costing around £90) but I swear by them as they straighten my hair better than any other straighteners I have used. The product I will be reviewing however is the GHD iron oil which is designed to be used in conjunction with GHD hair straightening irons.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Bottle ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GHD iron oil comes in a rather stylish black, 250ml, pump action bottle. The bottle looks very proffesional ( I will include a picture). The writing on the bottle is mostly white and there is an attractive gold pattern on part of the bottle. The bottle has a black plastic cap covering the pump, which is pulled off when you want to use the spray. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About the Spray ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The iron oil spray is a salon approved oil free formula (rather strange considering it is called iron OIL!!!!), which is designed for use with ghd ceramic hairstyling irons. The intention is to create straighter, smoother, static-free hair the professional way. When you use the formula you are greeted with a really nice salon product smell, which is not strong or overpowering at all which makes the product pleasurable to use. Because only a very small amount of the spray is needed, the bottle does last an extremely long time (a fair few months).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How To Use ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The iron oil can be used on either dry hair or on wet hair before blow-drying. To use on dry hair before using ceramic straighteners it is recommended that you use sparingly and lightly mist over dry hair. In terms of using the spray, I would recommend that you hold it about 15cm away from your hair and then press the pump to get an even but light spraying, it is then a good idea to comb through your hair before styling so that it evens it out and covers all of your hair!
To use on wet hair, spray in the same way before blow-drying and then style as usual. When using ceramic straightening irons after using the iron oil spray, you will hear a fizzling noise while straightening and steam will come of off your hair as you style so don’t worry – its not smoke!!
It is wise to avoid your eyes when you are spraying! (trust me!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Claims ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The bottle makes several claims, which I will evaluate individually:
- Protects against heat –
Although this is a hard thing to judge, I have not noticed any difference in my hair whether I use the spray or not. Because of the reasons which I will explain below I no longer use this spray and my hair is in no worse a condition than it was when I was using the iron oil, so in regards to the claim that the spray protects against heat, all I can say is that there is no real difference.
- Increases shine -
I believe that I have given the iron oil spray a fair few trials, yet every time I have used it, as soon as I straighten my hair it makes it feel and look really greasy and other people who have used the spray have commented on this too. Now unless you class greasy looking hair as ‘shiny’ then the spray really doesn’t fulfil this claim. Even when the most minute amount of the spray has been used on squeaky clean hair, it makes my hair go greasy so there is no shine, just greasy dullness.
- Improves hold -
I have found that my ghd straighteners are so effective that my hair keeps its style well anyway, and I have not noticed an improvement in hold when using this spray, unless it is assuming that the greasiness will hold your style!
- Eliminates static -
Usually when I straighten my hair without using the iron oil I do get a few static areas of hair but I can normally deal with these easily by slowly re-straightening them. When using the iron oil I have to say that I have noticed that my hair is less static but this is only when a more generous amount of the spray is used which unfortunately means my hair becomes even more greasy than when just a small mist is used! It is a shame because although the spray does help reduce static, the effect of the greasy appearance just isn’t worth it.
- Helps repair damaged hair by revitalising every strand -
Again, this is not an effect, which I have noticed. My hair was in no better condition when I was using the spray than it is when I do not use the spray. I know that it is better for your hair to use a spray that protects against heat but I really do not think this spray makes much of a difference.
- Helps you achieve straighter, smoother hair -
My ghd hair straightening irons are extremely effective and by just using them alone I can get very straight and smooth hair. When using the iron oil spray there is no real difference other than the hair looks more lank and greasy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Cost and Availability ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GHD products are only available in some salons or on the Internet. The price for the iron oil on the official ghd website is £13.45 which in my mind is far too expensive for a product which doesn’t do as it says.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this product because I was extremely disappointed with it. I was so impressed with my GHD hair straighteners but this iron oil just does not live up to the ghd hype. Obviously different peoples hair will react differently to this product and it may well work for some people, however everyone who I have spoken to that uses this product has complained that it leaves their hair far to greasy and does not do as it says on the bottle so I have nothing positive to say about the product in relation to effectiveness. The only real positives I can come up with are that firstly the bottle is very stylish and attractive and secondly that the product has a very pleasant smell. Other than that I am afraid to say that I could not possible recommend the product because my hair actually looks and feels better if I don’t use the spray at all! I will be on the look out for a heat protection spray that works well and doesn’t leave my hair looking lank and greasy.
Advantages: As good as the irons Disadvantages: Cost
...opinions on this website about GHD (Good Hair Day) straighteners but none yet about their iron oil so i feel its only fair to tell you about this!!
In "The Salon" style of things - Have your heard of GHD??
Well many of you will know (and for those that dont i shall tell you!) that GHD are famous for ceramic hair straighteners. These in my opinion are one of the best straighteners money can buy and will set you back approx £90.00!! Before you pass ... ...This is where the GHD Iron Oil comes to the rescue.
I use these straighteners every day in life and therefore need to protect my highlighted hair as best as i can. (I have nightmares about it all disintegrating and falling off!!)
It was whilst i was having my hair straightened by my hairdresser one day that i noticed she was using this Iron Oil. I was very curious to what she was spraying on my hair so asked her what it was. She explained to me ...

Advantages: COMPLIMENTS THE IRONS Disadvantages: CALLED IRON OIL BUT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY??
...very well worth the money GHD straighteners a few months ago, but I felt as if I should invest in the GHD iron oil spray - as it tells you to in the instructions for the starighteners. I was told that you can't buy this in the shops, and only a few salons sell it, so using my good old faithful internet, I decided to go surfing (not literally!) and try to find some, after a while, i'd came across a few websites that would send some to me when they ... ...the product..... it is called: GHD PROFESSIONAL IRON OIL. The title does throw you a little bit as on the back of the bottle, it reads: Iron Oil is the devine way to achieve straighter, smoother hair, improve hold and increase shine when used with ghd ceramic hair styling irons. It's advanced oil-free (See! Oil free, yet it's called irom OIL!) formula protects against heat, eliminates static and helps repair damaged hair by revitalising every strand. ...

...received a free bottle of GHD iron oil with it; I was extremely pleased as I didn't have to pay £10-15 just to try it out.
The black bottle looks great and you do feel like you are using an exquisite product and even more so by the entire buzz surrounding their popular hair straighteners. The product says that is a "Oil-free', so why they stated it is an oil is something which has baffled me, but I guess if it mimics the benefits of using oil during ... ...is not something many people aspire to have) then that is my guess.
It recommends that each section of dry hair should be lightly sprayed with the mist prior to using your straighteners: I found this to be very time consuming, as you spray each section, then straighten, then start again on the next section, and because I was constantly picking up and putting down either the bottle or my straighteners, my arms started to hurt and also the fact that ...

It is important to avoid contact with eyes when using this product so when spraying remember to keep away from the eyes.

Use a split end sealer such as Redken split end sealer for ultimate finish.
There are other products in the same market for the protection of hair that are much cheaper. Try Tigi products as well as Nicki Clark and Swartzcoff(sorry for spelling).

Advantages: Stops frizzy hair and protects your hair if you use straighteners Disadvantages: Cost might seem a bit steep - but product lasts for ages
...If only I had bought GHD iron oil first! Its made my hair look like it does when I have just left the hairdressers - smooth, shiny (but not greasey) and it looks in great condition. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has suffered from frizzy, unruly hair!

Advantages: great product Disadvantages: expensive
GHD Thermal Protector Spray for Normal Hair. I got this product when I purchased my new hair straightners and i was not dissappointed, when using hair straightners they cause so much damage so you have to go out of your way to protect and save it from split ends and drying out.
This product replaces the GHDIronOil and there are different sprays for all hair types from normal to thin hair. It replaces the mositure taken out of your hair from straightening and that enable the protection and hold.
This is a spray that is a damage protection spray and GHD Thermal Protector is for normal to fine hair and with its great new formula with extra heat protection.
It is a product with a great fragrance leaving your hair feeling fresh and clean and conditions your hair whilst also smoothing your hair. The thermal protection spray also ...
Advantages: Fantastic stuff - worth every penny Disadvantages: None - don't let the price tag put you off though!
important, then, that I use a good thermal protector. You'd think this would be obvious, right?
It may surprise you to learn, then, that I hadn't used one for ages before being given this free by my hairdresser (yeah, I'm still trying to work out why they gave me freebies too!). There is a reason for this - all the ones I'd tried had been rubbish! I'd had ones that made me greasy; some that made no difference whatsoever; some that made me static, but none that worked to stop my hair getting damaged. The worst one I'd ever tried was GHD's IronOil - this horrible product had left my dry hair like an oil slick, hanging limply around my face. I didn't hold out high hopes for this one then.
There are two ways to use this spray: the easy way and the time-consuming way. I choose the easy way (as do most hairdressers when they use similar products ...
Advantages: Smells lovely, protects your hair, it comes in a pink bottle! Disadvantages: None...yet!
What can I say? I am very impressed with this product! For just under £5 it is great! I use it all the time! It has become a part of my routine of straightening my hair.
This wonderful miracle is just what any hair straightening adict needs. It might not be as good as the ghd, I have both so I can compare, but it's good enough for me, esspecially with the price! And as a student, I do not tend to feel that I am using to much or wasting it, like I do with the ghdironoil.
Why did I buy it?
The first thing that attracted me was the bright pink bottle in boots. When I purchased it it was on offer for 3 for 2 which made me step closer. The bottle looked familiar. I then realised that I had seen it in one of my many magazines and that it won best heat protective spray 2004 award. Must be good I thought. After much time I ...
