OK, I'm going to admit it, I have a vice. I'm not a particularly vain person. In fact I'm generally a bit of a scruff. I hardly ever bother to wear make-up (far too much like hard work) and I'd rather be comfortable than classy. But I can't resist messing about with my hair.
I have been "blessed" with naturally wavy hair. For years I just let it grow, and generally did very little with it, aside from tying it back. There was a bit of backcombing in my goth days of course, and I guess it suffered a bit from that. Then there was the time I got bored and shaved the sides off and it took forever to grow back. Then I got married, and did the obligatory getting all my hair cur off after the wedding. It was the first time I'd had my hair short since I was a kid. That was all very well and good for a couple of years, but then I got bored again and decided to grow it once more.
I've just got through the awful not really long, not really short stage, and it's starting to look reasonable again. The problem I have with my hair though, is that it NEVER looks tidy. It just doesn't do it. Even when I come away from the hairdressers (one of my favourite treats) I still have to go with the (fortunately fashionable) "messed up" look. It doesn't help that I am absolutely hopeless at hairstyling, and besides, I'm not prepared to get up early enough in the morning to faff about for hours with my hair.
For a few weeks before my last visit to the hairdressers, I had been toying with the idea of straightening my hair. Never having had straight hair, the only inkling I had of what it might look like was when my hair was absolutely soaking wet. Now I read somewhere that some psychologists had done a study (glad they're spending their time usefully) and had discovered that straight-haired people tend to do better in job interviews than curly-haired
people. Apparently people with straight hair are viewed as efficient and organised, whereas people with curly hair are viewed as disorganised and scatty. Hmmm. I'm not telling you how accurate that is in my case. (An aside - do you think this means we will see the nature of our hair being built into the ever expanding bureaucracy of equal opportunities?).
I digress. So, there I am at the hairdressers, and having decided what colours I was having in my hair this time, I asked my incredibly understanding hairdresser if she could cut it in such a way that it would work straight as well as in it's natural erratic state. "I can straighten it for you if you want to see what it would look like", she offered. How can a girl refuse?
The straighteners she used were the GHD ceramic straighteners. The finished job looked absolutely fantastic. It was so tidy and neat looking, I hardly recognised myself. I got numerous complimentary comments at work the following day. (Yep, I slept on it, ran a brush through it and done - how easy is that? I got an extra 10 minutes in bed!).
Of course, I asked my hairdresser for advice on what straighteners to buy myself. I trust her judgement, she always manages to do a smashing job with my chaotic hair. She said she wouldn't recommend anything other than GHD. We discussed the steam straighteners, which seemed illogical to me as steam just makes my hair go frizzy, and she agreed. Others, she felt, simply weren't as effective or gentle on your hair as the GHD.
So a couple of weeks later I returned to the hairdressers to fork out the £88 (yes, you read that right, £88!) for the straighteners, and a further tenner for the serum you must use on your hair before using the straighteners. I had shopped about a bit, but unfortunately you won't find these in the Argos catalogue. (Another aside - you will find a thing for "hair tattoos" though - what's that all about?). They seem to only be available at hairdressers.
So, onto the product (at last!). I should point out at this stage that the GHD straighteners are in fact a versatile hairstyling tool, which they call a "hairstyling iron". They don't just straighten your hair, you can also use them to curl, flip, twirl and shine your hair. They even claim to condition it, although quite how running 210 degrees of heat across your hair can possibly condition it I'm not sure. They claim:
"fast heating ceramic element gives you full styling control and creates a negative ion charge that seals in moisture, natural oils and hair colour for total hair protection".
You don't have to wash your hair before use, but if you do it helps to blow dry it as straight as you can before you start, just to make the process easier. The instructions state you must NOT use the product on wet hair. I'm sure there's a good reason for this, but don't ask me! Once your hair is bone dry, you're ready to go.
Setting the straighteners up for use couldn't be more simple. Plug them in and turn them on - but of course be sure not to place them on a heat sensitive surface as these babies do get bloody hot!
They heat up really quickly - probably ten to thirty seconds. When you turn them on a little red LED lights up. Once the LED pulses you're ready to go. Believe me, they heat up so fast you won't have finished applying that all important serum to your hair ready for straightening.
You will need to straighten your hair in fairly small sections, so it really helps if you have some butterfly clips to keep the bits your not doing out of the way. Take a section, and slide the straighters over it fairly quickly. It probably won't straighten in one go, but of course it's better to do several little goes rather than one big one and risk burning your hair!
Now, this is where I have one problem. You see, they get so flipping hot, I am absolutely terrified of them! You can feel the heat by your face as you use them, and if you dare to touch a section of hair just after completing a swipe with the straighteners you will be surprised just how hot it gets. Now, I'm probably just a girly wuss, but after managing to do the front of my hair reasonably well I had to employ my husband's assistance to do the back. There were a couple of scary moments here; once where he went too close to my ears and freaked me out, and another when he commented "is smoke supposed to come off your hair?" at which point I told him he needed to do it quicker! (I hasten to add at this point that the smoke thing did not happen when the hairdresser did it!) I had to sit down then.
*** ABOUT THE IRONS ***
The irons are lighweight and generally easy to handle. My problems were caused more by my own ineptitude than any fault with the irons themselves. They are about an inch wide - they are not big heavy plates like some of the straightenrs you see. This makes them a bit less cumbersome, and of couse gives them that added versatility to curl, flip, twirl etc. I'm afraid I haven't tried to do any of these (hey, my hair's wavy already, remember) so I can't really comment on how they work for that!
As all good electrical items should, they come with a one year guarantee. No problems so far though!
*** THE RESULT ***
The finished result did look fantastic, if I do say so myself ;) My hair was gloriously straight, but still seemed to have excellent condition, it wasn't at all dry as you might expect.
Your hair will stay straight until you wash it/get it wet, at which point of course all those natural curls will return. My hairdresser claims to use them about once a week properly, just "touching up" her hair in the mornings to give it a bit of extra shine. And they really do make your hair shine too! For me, I really have to wash my hair after a couple of days at most, but there was no hint of a return to curl before then.
*** SUMMARY ***
All in all, I thoroghly recommend this product, providing you're brave or skilled enough to use them! I'm just hoping I get better with practice.
They really do work, and they really do seem to put my hair in better condition, contrary to my natural instincts. The downside for me is the heat, which is not really a criticism as it is essential in order for the product to function properly. However, it does mean you have to be really careful, and if you're like me and not particularly skilled at styling your hair, you may find the whole experience a bit daunting.
If you want to muck about with your hair, but you care about keeping it in good condition, I wholeheartedly recommend forking out the vast sums of money required for these over other cheaper straighteners. My past experience with cheap crimping irons (we're going back a long way here!) always left my hair dry and miserable. No such complaints with GHD!
GHD irons have proved that even I can have a good hair day. If that's not recommendation enough for you, what is?
