Not only am I a typically materialistic teenager, but I’m a sucker for anything which I know is the best of the best. Which is why I blew my entire savings (£87-man I’m rich!) on GHD straighteners. GHD, or good hair day, are renowned throughout the hair industry as producing not only the best, but the most expensive straighteners out there, and are used by celebrities, celebrity hairstylists and the best in the business. So of course I had to have them.
This is the part where I brag about them. They come fully equipped with: • Ceramic plates which heat up to 210 degrees in 7 seconds • Temperature control which ensures your hair doesn’t set on fire…(helpful eh?) • A lightweight and slim design for optimum styling technique • Salon length cable • Styling hints and tips booklet
That part was really just a chance
for me to justify my horrendous spending habits and to convince myself it was for the good of womankind that I bought them. It was wasn’t it?
I bought my straighteners from www.4yourhair.com where for £87 I got the regular sized model and free next day delivery, which is cheaper than many websites, including the GHD website which charges £95 for the same product. I would urge you to look around when buying such an expensive product, particularly when there’s such variation out there online. You could purchase a pair on Ebay for a very reasonable price, but you must take into consideration the postal charges and the feedback of the seller before bidding.
I know you’ll think me very sad, but I must say I got rather excited about my straighteners coming. As promised I got next day delivery and practically assaulted the postie when he asked me to sign for them. My newly washed and blow dried hair was tingling with anticipation and by the state of it, was in desperate need of de-frizzing.
I flicked the switch, waited for the light to flash, sectioned my hair and began the magical process. My hair seemed to transform into someone else’s in an instant. The whole process took me10 minutes, rather than the usual 20-25 with my old “ceramic coated” straighteners, not only that, but it actually felt like a pleasure to straighten my hair rather than a chore.
The result, I must say, was amazing. You know that feeling when you get home from the hairdressers and say “I’m never going to get it this straight again”? Forget it. With these, my hair is more often straighter than the hairdressers ever got it, as well as shiny, polished and completely frizz-free. I remember seeing these in Heat magazine and thinking “Christ, £95 for a pair of straighteners, some people have more money than sense” I have since shall we say, devoured a rather large slice of humble pie. I was persuaded after my friend and her sister bought a pair between the two of them, and I barely recognised them when I next saw them, walking along, parading their new hair, rubbing it in my face (or my hair) that mine still had a kink at the back…laughing at me….
So maybe I exaggerate, but as far as I was concerned, they were necessary. Since then I’ve never looked back. My hair is permanently fabulous (well when I leave the house anyway), which in turn makes me feel more confident, as well as more beautiful, and celeb-like. Who needs David Beckham when I can have posh’s hair? Ok maybe the GHD’s lose on that one, but they pound the competition on everything else.
Until I bought these I’d spent about £90 on 3 other pairs of straighteners, which didn’t give me anywhere near as good a result as these, and I recommend you don’t buy any other but these. There are some cheaper versions on the market such as the Hairtools range, which, while giving you a good result, just don’t get your hair as straight, and will set you back nearly the same price. Anyone would think I worked for them wouldn’t they?
Well to satisfy the balance of pros and cons to some extent, I must dispel the fairy tale that these are actually good for your hair and don’t damage it. When you’re running 210 degrees over your hair, you can’t expect it to love you forever and stay perfect can you? Split ends are inevitable, and are one of my many pet hates, but they cannot be avoided. Ever. The only solution is to chop them off. So don’t fall for the illusion that your hair won’t suffer, because it will, and the only thing you can do is use a damn good heat protector, like GHD iron oil, or infatreat to help prevent extreme damage, and bear in mind, all straighteners give the same consequences, with nowhere near as good a result.
To conclude, Despite my split ends, my flagging bank balance, and the evil stares from others who haven’t yet discovered these little beauties, I have fabulous hair, and could give posh a run for her money any day. Well not for her money…but for her ‘do at least.
Well written and helpful! I am currently considering buying GHD's, i have naturally, rather straight hair. or so I've been told. However through teen years its becoming more and more wavy. I shall not deny that i too want GHD's because they are the best! But it makes a surprising difference, when straightened my hair looks quite nice. I feel guilty though, because i have various friends with far more uncontrollable hair than me who can't afford GHD's, and i don't need quite so powerfdul ones and am considering them. I have more than enough money, and would like the very best! What does anyone else think?!
excellent review, and very clear insight into things i have wondered myself- with the split ends, how split are they many people say a trimming once a monther is enough to get rid of them, is this the case in your experience?
Thankyou, well done xx
Advantages: Poker straight hair for days, seems to keep hair clean for longer and they look very smart and expensive Disadvantages: V.expensive. Would hurt SO much if you accidentally touch the irons
