Well, I'm sitting here at uni trying to do some revision. I thought i'd jump on ciao for a bit and see what's happening. Trying to think of what i have used lately that i could write a review about, this struck me straight in the face. I was sitting in front of this monitor and thought why not write a review of this piece of cr*p! I mean, i generally only write about stuff i enjoy, now i can for the first time tell you about a product that is not only poorly designed, but seems to be used by a lot of my uni departments, probably because it was cheap!!! So here goes, the GNR A7 Series CM1772FS - display - CRT - 17":
---- STATISTICS AND FEATURES Device Type Display = CRT Dimensions (WxDxH) 41 cm x 42.5 cm x 40.1 cm Approx. Weight 15 kg Diagonal size=17" Viewable size= 16" Max Resolution= 1280 x 1024 / 60 Hz Manufacturer warranty= 3 years Price= £69.00 inc VAT (e.g at www.bargainbuys365.co.uk)
---- LOOKS This monitor is the same size and shape as other CRT monitors of this screen size. The front panel has the the screen surrounded by a one and a half inch panel. The bottom is slightly larger, to make way for the buttons, which include a power button (touch sensitive- annoying!) and the usual menu buttons. The monitor is literally the size of my portable tv. It is pretty basic in it's design and has an old nineties style to it. The finish on the plastic is what puts me off. You know what i mean, that slightly rough textured feel that was on literally every plastic electrical appliance in the late eighties, early nineties. God, how things have changed since then!
---- PERFORMANCE This monitor performs ok. But, it does seem to have a dullish quality to it. Rather like it's got a plastic coating to protect it, but you just can't seem to take it off! The screen displays colour, contrast, brightness and sharpness poorly. It seems distorted and the picture quality isn't exactly crisp!. One problem with this screen is sometimes you can actually see the pixels on the screen. This distorts colour, but not particularly noticeably. The image refresh rate is pretty poor. It has problems coping with fast things, such as the net. When you compare this CRT to others around today, and that number is dwindling as well, due to the influx of flat TFT monitors. This does not hold up that well. It has a lot to improve upon. When playing games, this monitor does not perform that well. I suppose it was designed for people to use at uni for the net and work, not for games.
---- WEIGHT It weighs about 15 kilos. This is quite heavy! This, factored in with the size is quite bad. But, it is a CRT, so what can you do?
---- SETTING UP THE MONITOR The uni set this up, so i don't know if it was easy to set up. I suppose if you think about it, if the uni can do it and so many of them, it can't be that hard. After all, there is only two cables- the power and the tower connector.
---- FUNCTION BUTTONS The monitor has a button for power and a menu button. In this menu you can change the screen details, such as colour, brightness and colour.
---- PRICES & AVAILABILITY I looked on the net and this was going for £68.13 on the above website. Ok i suppose, but there are plenty better ones around for the same price range.
---- OVERALL This monitor is pretty much on it's deathbed. Don't bother getting it.
