TomTom Wireless GPS Receiver 20 channel GPS receiver module

I dont have a 20 channel receiver however I do have a 12 channel receiver which came in the box with my Tom Tom Navigator 5 for PDA, whichi I use in my Treo 680 Smart Phone. The whole thing works perfectly and I couldn't ask for more as Sat Nav goes. The GPS receiver looks identical to the 20 channel one shown here and if this one works as well as mine does then you can't go wrong. It has a matt cover which makes it stay put where ever you place ...
...it picks up a signal very quickly and once linked to the PDA by bluetooth it keeps the signal so long as it can see just a tiny bit of sky. Once linked I take the unit off the dash and place it on the floor of the car in between the seats and it keeps the signal through motorway tunnels and even during a traffice halt under a bridge! It does link up even if placed on the floor straight away, however that takes a few moments so up on the dash is best ...

SatNav on a handheld or smartphone

Advantages: all-in-one device
Disadvantages: difficult to set up

...hands-free. I bought the TomTom software at the same time as the hands-free kit from PDAmods.com. It was a bad idea. I could not get the GPS signal recognised by the handheld PDA. As it takes its power from the cigarette-lighter socket in the car (there is no other external power source available) I could not try configuring it unless I was sat in the car. Not much use when you need technical help and have to use a separate phone to talk to TomTom ...

TomTom Navigator 2 Bluetooth

Advantages: No wires solution and portable to another vehicle or for walking
Disadvantages: Sometimes difficult to setup and GPS 'mouse' has been know to have problems

...but I can not priase TomTom with their excellant customer service. With the add ons of several free Points of Interest software this is an excellant solution. In 2004 TomTom released their 3rd version. This was offered at £19 and is a wise investment as the maps are updated and with the add on for traffic management is worth it alone. ...

Advantages: Lots of programs that can be used to update poi's
Disadvantages: sometimes hangs no way of personaly updateing maps

I have had my tomtom 3 bluetooth for about 1year now and is the perfect companion to my ipaq4150 i wouldnt be without it now. Simple to use just turn it on and click the navigater program on your ipaq and it'll link up with the gps. Plenty of good apps out there for addons to tomtom navigator like postcode finder and poi update with a net database so you can download new poi's and import them into navigator.
