    In the early 90's when I stumbled into the Tamil serious literature arena( Tamil-My mother tongue,spoken in the southernmost state of India-Tamil Nadu) Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a cult name and the man himself was treated as none less than a Demi-god. Even now, for many , the phrase 'Magical Realism' is synonymous with Gabriel Garcia Marquez here. When I started reading Marquez -in English as well as Tamil translation- I too was unable to resist the Marquez magic.     Advantages Advantages Articulate, enlightening and a must read as indicated by his winning a Nobel prize in literature

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Perhaps a little difficult to keep track of characters in his stories at times.

    The works of Gabriel García Márquez have provided this Englishman (with little prior knowledge of Latin America) an understanding of the grim nature of Latin American history in an enjoyable and palatable fashion. The language employed by García Márquez, as conveyed in translation; in particular the translations of Edith Grossman, flows beautifully, intelligently, humerously and is without frustrating obtuseness.
