Advantages: A very capable machine that will produce great coffee if YOU are capable of driving it! Disadvantages: A little bit plasticy outside but the internals are all Gaggia industrial quality
I have owned one of these for over 12 months and it gets regular use since I could drink espresso all day!
Please note that I have given this only four stars given that there are machines out there costing many thousands which will doubtless make slightly better coffee - in its price range however, it really deserves five for the quality of the coffee, but it is marked down slightly because of the finish - superb internals (exactly the same as more expensive Gaggias, but in a lightweight and slightly plasticy shell).
The key to getting a good espresso is not so much in the machine as in the expertise of the brewer. Do a little research on how to make good coffee and you will find this machine easily produces espresso far better than any you can find in the high street coffee chains.
The other key to success is in your grinder - I had ...
Advantages: Makes café quality espresso with a perfect crème Disadvantages: Water can be too hot sometimes
I bought this espressomachine in September 2008 from my local speciality coffee shop; "MacBean's" in Aberdeen, Scotland. After viewing it in the shop it struck me as a thing of beauty as much as coffee machine and I could imagine it taking it pride of place in my kitchen- which it now does.
I paid £250 from this local Gaggia agent, though online it can be found much cheaper- for about £150 or even cheaper on sites such as eBay. I got a good deal as I when I asked for some free coffee to sweeten the purchase I was surprised to find I also was given a set of six espresso cups and saucers for free. I suggest you ask around when purchasing this machine as it seemed like the shop might have got them free from Gaggia as a promotional item.
After struggling home with my heavy purchase and regretting not taking a car I opened the box to ...
Advantages: Makes excellent espresso, cappuccino and latte coffee Disadvantages: Needs to be cleaned and maintained regularly
I've never been particularly keen on drinking coffee at work - the options usually consisting of either a mug of the instant variety made with water boiled in a disgustingly furred-up kettle, or a paper cup of brown-coloured hot liquid dispensed by a temperamental vending machine - so it was with some relief when I began a new job last year to learn that there was an espressomachine at my disposal, with which to make a cup of 'real' coffee whenever I wanted one. I wouldn't term myself a coffee snob by any means, but I'm a firm believer that there's no competition between the genuine article and its powdered or granular equivalent, despite what the Kenco lady in the television commercials would have us believe.
