chassis and very attractive brushed stainless steel panelling on the front. This machine brings together Gaggias expertise and experience with beans-to-cup machines and the durability, attractiveness and easy-care of a metal body. It features all of Gaggias latest developments from their range of fully automatic domestic espresso machines. You make your espresso with a simple touch of a button. The machine will grind the coffee beans and extract your espresso directly into your cup. The used coffee grounds are automatically removed from the brewing head and stored in an internal container which only needs to be emptied when full or at the end of the day. The Gaggia Titanium also benefits from a built-in revolving base which allows you to rotate it easily for access to the sides and back. The brewing group is also easy to remove from the machine for cleaning. The water reservoir is accessible from the top and can be filled from a jug without being removed from the machine. This machine incorporates a double boiler heating system with a Rapid Steam function which reduces the time between coffee and steam delivery to just a few seconds. For those that dont want to froth the milk themselves it even comes complete with an auto-cappuccino attachment - just place the end of the tube into a container of milk and it will automatically dispense frothed milk directly into your cup! After owning a Krups Crematic combi machine for 5 years, I wanted to own something a step up, although there was nothing really wrong with the Krups and it served me well on a daily basis.
Although the new Gaggia Titanium has been out for at least a few months there don't seem to be any reviews of it yet, so I hope this is of help. I was in 2 minds whether to plump for this model or the slightly cheaper Gaggia Synchrony Digital Compact. The main reason the Titanium won was because the water tank was double the size of the Compact, the look was better, and the features were improved. One of the other differences between these two models is the Titanium has an "active" cup-warmer whereas the Compact has a "passive" cup-warmer. Active means it has it's own heater, not just the heat from the machine.
So - on with the review. Set-up was easy - almost plug-in and go. The instruction manual is fairly comprehensive, so no trouble there. The finish on the machine's body is generally good, although a couple of niggles:
1) The coffee nozzle is silver painted plastic - shame it's not metal. 2) Small scratches on the plastic control panel round the buttons - not worth sending it back for, but a negative point. 3) The small flap at the side of the machine where you can lift the steamer out to a much higher angle (should you need to) is flimsy.
Making a coffee couldn't be easier - obviously there is the usual experimenting with grind settings (18!) and dosage strength. It's very quick, and with 2 separate boilers there's no waiting for the steam to heat up.
One of the great things I loved about the machine is that you can easily change the 3 cup-size buttons to suit your cup sizes exactly. Also you can set the machine to go to standby anywhere between 15 minutes of no use and 3 hours, as well as being able to program the machine to come on and go off at specific times of the day.
There are 2 methods of frothing milk for cappuccinos - one is to use the regular steamer already attached to the machine which is fine. Or you can use the "Cappucinatore" attachement which looks rather unattractive, but sucks the milk from one container, heats and froths it (very well) and dispenses it into your waiting coffee. If this wasn't so unattractive it would be great to use it all the time.
The machine also has automatic cleaning and descaling programs, reminds you to re-fill the beans, empty the dregs, empty the drip-tray, clean the brew-group, etc, etc.
The machine also gets rid of any water left in the pipes after turning the machine back on ensuring that no cold water remnants from a previous session end up in the next cup.
Another feature is the by-pass dosing facility, where you can use ground coffee (decaff for instance) instead of the beans in the machine.
My only complaint is that the regular frothing tube is a bit loose and can easily slip off. But apart from this, which I'll be contacting Gaggia about, the machine is great - stylish, easy to use and great coffee!
UPDATE: Unfortunately, the machine completely broke down after 3 months, refusing to pump water through. I returned the machine and chose to replace with the Jura Z5 which is a much more sturdy and quieter machine.
Advantages: Quality of coffee, does everything. Disadvantages: Instructions could be more clear.
If you are serious about having the best coffee's possible then this is the machine for you. The machine has a stainless steel front, also on the front is the usual drip tray, this catches any drips or spills, there is the steam nozzle, this is used to froth the milk from a small jug or you can attach the Cappuccinatore(this is not always a supplied accessory) so check before you purchase as this is an excellent accessory and I would recommend purchasing ... ...basically the Cappuccinatore pushes on to the steam tube, then the little rubber pipe goes into a jug containing milk, the milk is then sucked up through this and it them comes out of the, well what I would describe as a ball shaped object, it will come out of this ready frothed into the cup which you place below it, it really gives excellent results. Also on the front is a series of buttons these are,Espresso(makes an Espresso), normal coffee, Cafe ...

Gaggia can take a long time to ship a refurbished unit but they did tell me the lead time when I ordered it. (Refurbished machines are machines that are new, but have been shop damaged or had parts missing and so get returned to Gaggia and are repaired under warranty.)

The Gaggia Titanium is functionally exactly the same machine as the Synchrony Compact Digital, except the Titanium is mostly metal casing and not plastic, looks a bit sturdier, more attractive, and there have been some good design improvements over the previous models, namely:
- Immediately looks more solidly built, and pleasingly shiny.
- Easier to use door-catch.
- Bigger water tank that is much easier to remove and ...

Advantages: Looks good. Easy to use. Great coffee Disadvantages: failed 4 times in 3 years. Poor customer service from Gaggia
I've had my Gaggia Titanium for 3 years now and the coffee produced is great. However in that 3 years it has been out or action/with Gaggia/awaiting Gaggia for about a year. Six weeks in it started leaking from the bottom of the machine (instead of dispensing coffee). It took about 3 months to get Gaggia to collect it (charge me £50) and return it. The carriage fee was refunded by the supplier of the machine in 2007 it sprung more leaks, constant ... ...December to get through to Gaggia UK, then for them to try and talk me through ventilating the machine, then to send shipping labels to actually sending them the machine. Machine was returned January 14th 2009 (another Christmas lost) They tried to say it was due to scale build up, but, didn't charge me (which they said they would if it was scale) an I regularly descaled the machine May 2009 machine has failed with the same problem (less than a week ...

Advantages: Flashy looking Disadvantages: Twice the price of the same models
...same EXACTLY as any other Gaggia Synchrony/ compact. The machine is made by Saeco which is badged as Prima/Gaggia and Saeco. Prices for the same machines run at 230 pounds to over 800. The only difference being the buttons, it does nothing different to Synchrony compact (Costing a couple of hundred pounds) I bought this to replace a synchrony Compact but returned it when I rumbled their ploy! They do make good coffee, better than the Siemens range ...

Advantages: Temperature of beverage; Taste; Great looks; Large water capacity; Quiet operation Disadvantages: Price of consumables; central coffee spout could raise higher
...I have just replaced my GaggiaTitanium which after 3 months decided to break down. I decided rather than replace with the same machine to go with the much-praised Jura machines. The Z5 particularly appealed with it's unique One-Touch Cappucino function, which avoids the clumsy looking "automatic frothing attachments" found on so many machines.
The machine was easy to set up, and has almost the same footprint as the Titanium, so doesn't take up too much space. It comes with a classy looking thermal milk container (1 litre) which keeps milk at the ready and chilled for up to 8 hours. The front of the machine is brushed aluminium (not plastic as in many of the Jura machines) which is far easier to keep clean than the Titanium's brushed stainless steel (fingerprints!).
The display prompts are clear (product names such as "1 espresso...

Advantages: Filter and Espresso / Capp. functions; Price; Finish; Reliability Disadvantages: Espresso side often slows to a drip; Steam function slow
...I have only just upgraded from this to a super-auto machine (GaggiaTitanium), but have used it on a daily basis for 5 years, and it had a previous owner before that, so it has certainly been a reliable workhorse.
I used it mainly for the filter coffee side which was flawless and has an anti-drip operation enabling coffee to be taken from the jug before the process is complete without the coffee still in the machine leaking all over the hotplate.
The finish for the price is good - far better than the Delonghi and Morphy Richards models which look cheap. You can also get a digital version of this model now which enables you to program the machine to come on / off automatically.
The steam wand is good, but slow as are most of this type of machine - only having a single boiler, the water needs to heat up to a higher temp...
