"Star Trek spoof"

Fans of Star Trek will find many aspects of the film, Galaxy Quest, very familiar. It is about washed-up stars of a science fiction programme similar to Star Trek.

The film follows the cast of Galaxy Quest, who rely on the convention circuit and personal appearances to make a living, as the show was cancelled years ago. The main star of the show, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) is the only cast member who enjoys the fan admiration, whereas his fellow stars, who hate each other, despair at being type cast and struggle to develop their acting careers. However, after meeting a group of people who claim to be aliens called, Thermians, led by Mathesar (Enrico Colantoni), they are flung into a battle against General Sarris (Robin Sachs) and his fleet, who are engaged in a deadly war with the Thermians.

Dean Parisot has made a brilliant and really funny film that pokes fun at the Star Trek series. The cast is excellent with stars such as Sigourney Weaver and Sam Rockwell, as well as British actor, Alan Rickman, who appears in make-up. The special effects are great and add to this stylish looking film. Galaxy Quest is hilarious and is suitable for everyone, not just science fiction fans.

Manufacturer's product description

GALAXY QUEST is a satirical comedy that pokes fun at the influence science fiction shows such as STAR TREK have had on their audience. The cast members of the cult sci-fi television series GALAXY QUEST now earn their livings appearing at conventions and grand openings, led by their bomastic captain Jason Nesmith, played by Tim Allen. When an alien race--the Thermians--arrives on earth, it appears that they have mistakenly appropriated the show's culture as their own, thinking the series was actual fact. Desperate for help in battling the evil General Sarris, they bring the actors with them into space to save their planet. A surprisingly smart and funny send-up of the science-fiction culture and the influence television has on the world at large, GALAXY QUEST is a comedy that even non-genre fans can enjoy, with terrific turns by Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub.
