"What is a baby nest?" I hear you ask ...
Imagine an inflatable ring, similar to one you might give a small child in a swimming pool, put it inside a colourful fabric sleeve and put a "floor" in the hole.
Voila! - One baby nest.
But what do you do with it?
Put your baby in it of course.
Basically the ring encourages your bundle of joy (or any other names you decide to call your child) to sit up.
At first, looking at your child in the nest you might decide that they look a little uncomfortable, but soon they get the idea that with all the support that the nest provides that they can sit up by themselves (see later on for smaller babies), with hands free to play with any toys they happen to have in there with them.
The particular nest my daughter has, is very brightly coloured so as to be visually stimulating, and had various different textures around its rim for her to feel. Also some areas have crinkly material and squeakers inside to provide auditory stimulation.
I would say the main advantage of this nest is that you child can sit upright and get a good look around their environment "the right way up" rather than seeing everything from lying on the floor or pointing one direction strapped into a chair. Once they get the hang of sitting up in the nest they can quite easily turn around to face any direction.
There are no restraints to confine your child so once your child can crawl or maybe some advanced rolling they may be able to clamber over the rim of the nest, and on to further trouble, so it not really somewhere where you can leave your child unsupervised for any length of time.
A smaller/newborn baby could quite easily snuggle up in the floor of the nest and fall asleep so is probably quite a good place for an impromptu nap, although I can't say this as a certainty having only got the nest when Erin was 6 months old. However as the nest is in Galts "First Years" range and is described as being from 0 months onwards, I feel quite safe in saying this.
The ring is quite easliy assembled, by inserting the ring into the cover and then inflating it, unless of course like my wife and her mother you inflate the ring first! To dissasemble and transport you can then just deflate the ring. The cover is also washable, which does mean that any baby "spillages" of any description can be cleaned up easily and as an extra bonus does not goes over the carpet/sofa/cushions.
These nests seem to retail for around £25-£30 which I think is a very good price considering the amount of time Erin spends in hers!

...ciao, and found that the galt playnest popped up at number three. Not mindbending loud yell-emitting surprise, but more of a slight squeak on the surprise richter scale.
Reason? Well, I wouldn't personally call this item a great toy. A good toy? Yes. A sometimes quite useful toy? Yes. But a truly great toy? Nope. It's got quite a few drawbacks, and some of the plus points about it can easily be found in other combinations of other, often cheaper, ... ...old, and promptly punctured. But Galt are pretty good, and my playnest has so far withstood toddler interest, and is still going for baby number two to lurk in.
Playnest comes with a little blurb/booklet which explains how the colours stimulate your baby, and tells you that it can be used from newborn (with the ring partially deflated) through the first years (with ring fully inflated as soon as child can sit up) untill about three, when, according ...

“A soft supporting multi-sensory environment for baby, Playnest features a fun farm scene with the Gym as the sky above.” This is the introduction as written on the instructions. Advantages: Portable, washable, interesting, safe. Disadvantages: Expensive, hard to assemble, few months of use
...won’t have heard of a Galt baby nest unless you’ve got a baby in the family. I must admit it wasn’t high on my list of shopping priorities before I had my daughter but I now consider it to be one of my top three ‘must-haves’.
The Galt baby nest comes in two types. You can buy the nest just on its own which costs about £25 or with a play gym over the top for £40. I have seen them sold in Tesco, Argos and Blooming Marvellous (catalogue for Mothers ... ...available to buy separately.
Galt advertise that the baby nest is suitable from birth but I would actually dispute this because when my daughter was very small she found it hard to sit in because it doesn’t provide very good support for the back even when slightly deflated. She used to try and fall asleep in it and then become upset because she was so uncomfortable, she was really better off in a bouncy chair for the first few months.
If you can ...

Advantages: A bright, colourful, toy that keeps your baby safe and entertained Disadvantages: A bit bulky to store away at the end of the day
...baby was recently bought the Galt Playnest, and I am so impressed with it that I wanted to write and share it with other Ciao members!
The Playnest is an inflatable ring, measuring 39” (100 cm), with a brightly coloured and textured cover. The cover has a quilted centre for extra padding and is fully machine washable. The object of the Playnest is to provide a self contained resting and play area for babies and toddlers (the packaging says 0m+, ... ...although Argos are offering it at £19.99 at the moment, which is a great bargain!
I would certainly recommend the Galt Playnest to other parents, as our son has already had many hours of fun from it, and it is also proving to be a very useful development tool. ...

Advantages: good for helping baby learn to sit up Disadvantages: not so good for newborns
I first came across this product when Charlotte was learning to sit up on her own. Mooching round Mothercare one day I saw this and thought it would be ideal to sit Charlotte in so she could play. Also it would stop my cushions getting soggy, puked on etc etc. Basically it is a ring which baby sits in, or rolls about in without coming to harm. It measures 85cm in diameter (33" in old money), and is an inflatable plastic ring which fits inside a material ... ...cover - you'll save yourself a lot of time!!) The material is all different colours and textures and is based upon a farmyard theme. There is a crinkly barn door and a stratchy scarecrow's tie, a fluffy sheep and a squeaky ducks beak, for further investigation. The cover is very durable and washes up lovely on a 40 degree wash. They say this ring is suitable from birth but Ciaran looked very uncomfortable in it as the sides of the ring are quite ...
