Galt says you can use the Playnest from birth. I guess some people may do that but whenever I placed my son in it he was at an odd angle. Obviously as a newborn he couldn't sit up so I decided to wait for a while before sitting him in it again. Just before having my second child I was out shopping for all those little baby things to fill the house up with. When looking at floor mats and play gyms I wanted something different. My eldest had a flat mat with toys that hung above him. I saw the Galt Playnest and immediately fell in love. It was that something different I'd been looking for.

I got mine at John Lewis for £45 but I've seen it since for less. Seems quite expensive for what it is but all the mats and play gyms seem to be a bit pricey. The amount of money we parents shell out is ridiculous!

By about 4 months old he looked much more comfortable and the blown up ring inside the mat helped him to stay up. Whenever he'd start to fall to the side the ring would catch him, which was brilliant as it allowed me to get stuff around the house done.
Unfortunately it was only about a month later that he started to roll and from that moment he wasn't interested in the Playnest. If I put him into it he'd roll over the side so it wasn't the safest of places for him anymore.
The Playnest, unlike a lot of children's toys that blow up, doesn't come with a puncture repair kit. I was silly buying it as we have cats but oh well. I came home on a few occasions to see that cat asleep in the ring and as expected one day it was flat. My other half managed to find the hole and with the magic of Gaffa Tape fixed it.
All in all the Playnest is visually stimulating, soft and cosy, and quite easy to clean. It's a bit of a pain to put together and as you have read not much use for me, but I can see how it could be very useful for some children who are less intent on exploring the room.
In my opinion I'd stick with the traditional flat mats.
Advantages: Enhances playtime and encourages child development Disadvantages: Storage
~@~ GALTPLAYNEST AND GYM ~@~
“A soft supporting multi-sensory environment for baby, Playnest features a fun farm scene with the Gym as the sky above.” This is the introduction as written on the instructions.
The Playnest and Gym is for babies from birth to about 8 months, then the playnest alone can be used for older children as they wish.
Basically the ‘Playnest’ is an inflatable ring which sits inside a canvas, durable and machine washable, cover with farm scenes on. The ‘Gym’ is a set of 8 plastic poles and connectors which fit together, making 4 longer poles that meet at the top and is then again placed in a canvas covering and fitted via loops to the outside of the playnest. This gives a framework to hang the toys from using the numerous interlocking rings supplied. The following ...

Advantages: I know my daughter is safe in it Disadvantages: Big and bulky
Having 2 daughters, I first saw the Galt Baby Nest at my mother and baby group when i had my first daughter. Back then I though it was a good idea. So when I has my next daughter 6 months ago, I decided I would buy one.
I'd seen them for sale in Tesco, Argos and on the internet, so decided i'd go to town and pick one up from Argos. I didn't know which nest to get first of all, as there was also a GaltPlaynest with a play gym over it, but as I already had a gym i decided to just get the nest. I was more swayed by the fact that the nest with the gym was priced at 39.99 and just the nest was 24.99, but to my delight it was on offer for 19.99. Wow what a bargain.
So what is the Galt Baby Nest, I hear you ask. Well it's described as a soft, multi-sensory environment for baby. To you and me it is a large rubber ring ...

Advantages: Interesting textures/graphics that appeal to babies/ baby can sit propped up. Disadvantages: Limiting concept/not portable/quite large.
's table, then the inflated nest takes on mammoth proportions. What used to be floor space is now bouncy castle with a baby in it.
Going upstairs? Don't want to leave baby behind? Try carrying a large metre diameter rubber ring and a baby up a steep flight of stairs, with the ring going 'boiiiing, booiing' behind you, rather in the manner of Christopher Robin's Pooh Bear.
What else? Well, if baby likes to look at mobiles and arches, then you're scuppered if you've bought a playnest on it's own. Galt do sell a 'babynest and gym' but this is a seperate item, so you can't just buy the playnest, then later on invest in the gym. Bad design move? I think so. So if baby wants a gym, then it's back to the mat on the carpet.
Finally, the price. Well, the nest costs around £25.00. Yes, you get a lot of nest for your money, but I still think this ...
