The men who would be King
Advantages: Good clean, underhanded, backstabbing fun! Disadvantages: The game suffers with fewer than the full 6 players
...fantasy and the odd board game or three, hence it was only a matter of time until I got hold of a copy of The Game of Thrones board game, which nicely blends the two.
WHAT IS IT?
The Game of Thrones board game is a strategy game set in the world created by George RR Martin in the novel series of the same name. After the death of King Baratheon, 6 powerful Houses vie for the right of succession to the throne of Westeros. In this game, you control ... ...be put off though, this game is worth it! Each player chooses a random "House Card" which tells them which of the special characters (all taken from the novels) are theirs to control, which regions of the map they own at the start of the game and what army units to place in each location. Once the armies are placed on the board, you're ready to begin.
The turns are split into three phases, the Westeros Phase, the Planning Phase and the Action Phase. ...

BOARD (not bored) OF THE RINGS
Advantages: Great family board game Disadvantages: Not for the very young, a little complicated to set up
With the massive interest generated by the brilliant film adaptations of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (LOTR) it was inevitable that there would be a huge market for LOTR products especially games that could reproduce the feel of the original books. A very successful set of PS2 games was released but for the more traditional gamers an intelligently designed and very playable board game is also available.
The Lord Of the Rings board game is made by ... ...games. The game was created by the innovative designer Renier Knizia.
THE IDEA
As in any adaptation of a book the idea is to appeal to the current fans but also make it accessible for people who might be new to the genre. The gameplay must follow the original story but it must also be at a level that non-fans can also take part. In this respect this game does an admirable job.
As in the book the objective is to stop the Dark Lord Sauron from getting ...

Do you have what it takes to survive?
Advantages: Well made, high quality strategy board game Disadvantages: Lack of containers for the many pieces
The temptation for a games manufacturer to cash in on a successful title or idea is overwhelming and almost every blockbuster adventure/action film will sooner rather than later have its own game released on the PS2. Sometimes popular board games such as Monopoly or chess get the PC makeover with varying degrees of success. A less common transition is from PC to board game and this is what Fantasy Flight games the makers of 'Warcraft- The board game' ... ...strategy fantasy game first produced for the PC in the 90's by Blizzard Entertainment.
The challenge is to keep the feel of the game as close as possible to the well-known PC version. Of course the mechanics of the game, the resource gathering and the character battles as simulated on the PC are essentially based on rolling a die in the same way as is done on many other board games. In the PC version the computer does all the complicated bit in ...

All praise Emperor Atticus
Advantages: Excellent strategy game for age 10 and above Disadvantages: Need a strong bladder as games can be long.
...successful board game made by Hasbro that has been in existence for many years. Anything from two to six players can take part and for two player games there is a slightly different version otherwise it would become a little boring. The ideal number in my opinion is four players as this means that you do not have to wait too long for your turn and also with this number there are enough players to ensure you will be defending territory quite often ... ...they are not encouraged in the rules.
The objective of the game is simple, world domination. To achieve this you need to control all of the territories on the playing board. The board itself is basically a map of the world with a set number of territories marked out in each continent e.g. in Europe you have Western Europe, Great Britain etc.
Each player then has their own coloured army which is made up of units. An infantry man is one unit, cavalry ...

Darkness falls on Smalltown USA.
Advantages: Atmospheric, and exciting. Disadvantages: The rules are badly written
When Darkness Comes.
Smalltown USA. Picket fences, happy families, the American dream. But the darkness is never far away…..
This game is from the people who brought us Zombies!!!, one of my favourite games of all times. It shares some similar mechanics, but is a lot deeper.
It is in essence a horror themed boardgame/roleplaying game hybrid which on many levels works really well.
The theme is of horr falling on a small USA town. I love ... ...B movies and the like.
It’s amazing how the fitted such a large amount of stuff into one fairly small (the size is just about between A5 and A4) box. Contents include the board that consists of: 15 large tiles which represent the small town that the game is set. The artwork is good, and shows the streets and cut-away views of the buildings. 6 Character cards, that have been pre-generated so play can start immediately, 6 Pewter Figures to represent ...
