Notcutts (Solihull) - Great Gardening

Advantages: Excellent range and quality.
Disadvantages: Slightly pricey.

I love garden centres and Notcutts is one I visit regularly. My nearest branch is just off the M42, junction 4, south of Solihull. This is the only Notcutts I have ever used although they do have a further 12 around the midlands and south east. This branch has a large car park which is shared with Tesco, so at busy times it can take a while to find a space. On walking into the garden centre you first go through the cut flowers section. This always ...
...perennials I have purchased from Notcutts have already been large enough to divide up into 3 or 4 plants before putting them into the ground. So, although the price you initially pay might seem higher than elsewhere in fact you are getting good value for your money. Their range of roses is very good, as is the choice of shrubs, pond plants, roses, climbers, alpines, herbs and small trees. Plants come with a 2 year guarantee which shows that the company ...

A LIVING CATALOGUE

Advantages: Plenty of choice with beautiful gardens to wander through
Disadvantages: Little seating and somewhat more expensive than your average garden centre

My very first visit to Bridgemere Garden World was during late summer, 2001. I’d recently moved to South Cheshire and having seen the ads in the local newspaper decided that I wanted to visit what sounded like one humungous garden centre! Even so, I can honestly say that I hadn’t anticipated anything quite as large as Bridgemere. Covering more than 6 acres, this is a gardener’s dream come true! Thousands upon thousands of plants are for sale and, ...
...we decided to pop into Bridgemere on the way home to pick one up. It wouldn’t be entirely honest of me to say that they didn’t have one, but those they had were far too large for a pot on our patio. They were easily a meter in both height and width and at £27.50, out of our price range. We wanted one half the size that we could enjoy watching grow from year to year. Unfortunately, it was the big ‘un or nothing. The same applied to most other rhododendrons. ...

Down to earth experience at Gordon Riggs

Advantages: range of plants, pleasant atmosphere, price, super tea shop attached to centre
Disadvantages: getting harrassed by pensioners, you might spend a fortune

Gordon Riggs garden centre- a legend in its own lifetime. When I lived at home with my parents in Bury, we used to travel all the way to Walsden, near Littleborough, to buy plants and seedlings. IN the olden days, there were't many of these pioneering garden centres about and people travelled for miles to get to them. Now Gordon Rigg has a few of these centres in the Lancashire region, and they are doing well. People travel to them from miles around- ...
...pity as I love confiers...... GOrdon Riggs sell conifers from the tiny to the box variety at £80+..specialised! Outside is also the shrub section, and we saw some lovely shrubs. On the label it says the conditions for keeping the plants- and many of them require full sun..a bit ambitious in the British climate, but never mind- people buy them and if they die..the peopl come back to Gordon Riggs and get some more- never ending supply of customers! ...

Haskin's - Good sized and good selection

Advantages: good sized store, large outside area, cafe, near-by
Disadvantages: poorly educated staff, outside not maintained properly

Went to Haskin's near Longham for the first time on Saturday (18th Aug 07) as it was miserable outside and I wanted some seeds to plant and occupy myself for the day. The store is quite big and there is plenty of plants and garden tools to be distracted over. Initally I was quite impressed. Inside, the plants were well organised and tidy. Outside, however, was a different matter. Once you go though the back where the outside area is, quite a lot ...
...another or completely upside-down. Whether it was just a sudden one-time gust of wind that knocked them down immediately before I walked out or if they'd been like that for quite some time will remain a mystery I suppose but I would guess the latter as most of the staff (yes i'm about to be a bit judgemental) were young students who seemed to be there because it earned them a bit of money and not because they had any care or respect (or knowledge) ...

A Garden Centre and lots more

Advantages: Largest garden centre in the area. Good range of products. Plenty to occupy people who wish to spend some time here. Meals or snacks available
Disadvantages: With the new epansion there is a lot of walking between departments now. Lots mor people going now and I have found car parking very busy even though there are more spaces

Heighley Gate have just opened a massive Phase 1 of their extension to the existing site. There are a lot more products and because they have more buildings available for indoor housing it means there are more departments. The Garden Centre is situated on the A697 Wooler to Coldstream road North of Morpeth and opening hours are :- 9a.m. - 5.30 p.m. Mon - Fri. in Summer closing at 5p.m. in Winter. Saturday and Bank Holidays - 9a.m. - 5p.m. Sundays. ...
...accessible from a large car park and houses a gift shop where all sorts of items can be bought even down to pans and china. Ther are a large variety of house plants and all of the garden fertilisers, chemicals etc as well as pots and tubs. All sorts of garden tools are available and a very good selection of seeds and bulbs . I was very impressed by the vast selection of fresh vegetables, fruit and cut flowers and jams, chutneys, biscuits and meringue ...
