WHERE’S THE BLOOMIN’ INFORMATION?

Advantages: Lots of handy tips and published on a weekly basis
Disadvantages: Not always as informative as it should be

...gardening literature.

Garden News is published weekly and is available to buy on a Wednesday. If, like me, you choose to subscribe, you’ll receive it a day before it hits the shops although I‘m not sure that has any real advantage. For me, subscribing simply means that I’ll receive it every week without having to dash to the shop on publication day because in our town, leaving it one day later would usually mean it’s sold out. ...of Crewe in search of Garden News for me. I believe it was after one such fruitless journey that he suggested I take out a subscription.

Published by emap, this isn’t a magazine as such, more a gardening newspaper that generally consists of about 50 pages at a cost of 1.30 per issue.

It’s easy reading and although probably not of much interest to the professional gardener, I’m sure even those with a good few years behind ... more

Why do you buy it?

Advantages: Weekly and up to date
Disadvantages: Newspaper format rips easily and is cumbersome

...your age or size of garden I would recommend reading this newspaper. I am 25 and I find it very useful, but I know people who are retired who have read it for years. It is not stuffy or old, it features all the modern gardening techniques and plants as well as the tried and tested methods. Well worth the £1.20 cover price. ...

Garden News review

Advantages: Cheap to buy..brilliant articles
Disadvantages: weekly magazine

Garden News is a publication that has not really changed it's format in all the years that I have been reading it. However I have always thought it has been overlooked by gardeners in favour of the many glossy and predictable new publications that a true gardener would not buy. Garden News is crammed from cover to cover with superb snippets of information. It is in the form of a tabloid newspaper but with many colour articles. There are sections ...
...REAL people, not necessary TV celebrities, but famous people also write and give opinions like Geoffrey Smith whose page is sheer poetry as well as chock full of useful information. This paper is for experts and beginners alike. It is practical, down to earth and with a no-nonsense approach. There are often free seeds which I have found very good in the past and I class myself as an expert gardener. ...

Garden News

Advantages: Inexpensive, frequent (more up-to-date than monthlies)
Disadvantages: Hard to find in local shops

Having stumbled across Garden News (GN) by sheer chance in a supermarket a few years ago, I have since become a subscriber and avid reader. GN provides informative and interesting articles on a wide range of gardening problems and plants. From suggesting simple tasks that can be done in an afternoon, or illustrating the range of plants that can be found within individual species, GN does it all. There is, quite literally, something for everyone. ...
...shows, a letters/advice page, tips on design by Rachel de Thame, a column by Joe Swift, regular features by Carol Klein... GN is always a 'good read' and regularly provides guides to the flower shows, as well as useful identification guides to pests and diseases. Disadvantages? Firstly the loss of Geoff Smith's weekly gardening 'journal', but although I'm sure that regular readers will miss him and his mixture of poetic prose and sensible advice, ...

Truly Inspiring

Advantages: Individual magazine, gorgeous photos, more for the designer
Disadvantages: none

This is the sister title to 'Inspirations' the gorgeous home style magazine, and inspiring it definitely is. Like the regular Inspirations, Garden Inspirations is *completely* different from every other gardening title on the news stands. Although you have features and articles on all aspects of gardening, the emphasis is on garden *design*. Therefore if you have eclectic tastes or like your garden to be completely individual, this magazine is right down your street. There are always lots of projects and really individual looks to copy - looks you would never get in, say, Gardeners World or Garden Answers. The phopography here is sumptuous, the writing absolutely top class. If you are more a designer than a gardener, then definitely pick up a copy. Published monthly at about £2.40 it is a must read if you are interested ...

Review of Garden Inspirations

How do your pansies grow

Advantages: Wide range of articles, great photos, lots of offers
Disadvantages: Lots of adverts, quality photos make your garden look dull

When I was young I thought I would rather die than want to read this magazine, or watch the programme for that matter. Middle age has worked its miracle on me now and Gardeners' World seems like a good idea. The magazine costs £2.70 per issue and is released monthly. However you can subscribe using a form in the magazine, which either gives you a discount or a free gift, e.g. an Alan Titchmarsh book in the March 2003 issue. Gardeners' World magazine has recently won the Magazine of the Year award for containing the best mix of practical advice, plant profiles, features and news. I think this magazine is for both the relatively experienced and inexperienced gardener (count me in on the latter) and may even win a few reluctant gardeners over with its glossy pages. Some articles are very technical or full of unpronounceable ...
