Flymo Pac A Shred
Advantages: Robust. Shreds large diameter branches. Disadvantages: Less good with leaves and small items.
I brought the Flymo Pac A Shred in December 2007 and it has had 1 year of hard use in my half acre overgrown garden. It has munched through everything we have tried it with from Laurel to Hazel to Bramble, rose. and lylandai.
It is amazing how much it will pull through its jaws and the cutting capacity is as advertised. Any branch that fits into the jaws will be shredded. It is less happy with green leaves or old wood and prefers green woody material, ... ...stems or branches. It will pull through surprisingly twisted branches too, but may need a helping hand to line them up into the jaws.
It produces a good mulch which can be used around the garden or composted. It does require periodic adjustment of the blade but this has been frequent and heavy usage.
It is easy to manoevre around the garden and the container is robust.
Although it may look rather toy-like in its appearance it hides a robust and ...

Shred and Recycle the Bosch Way
Advantages: Gets rid of prunings easily Disadvantages: A bit noisy
...research we settled on the Bosch AXT 2200 Rapid Electric shredder. It was, by no means, the cheapest on offer, but it DID have some very positive customer reviews. It certainly had a lot of attractive features compared to the old one we had. For one thing it is much lighter – the last one weighed a ton! (A slight exaggeration of course). It also has wheels – oh joy! No more lugging a three legged monster round the garden before you can start!
We ... ...by a couple of weeks – but gaining a £10 voucher anyway, so it didn’t make too much difference. Assembly was easy enough, just a matter of fixing the stand and wheels, which took a few minutes, no more. One thing I found out, when reading the instruction leaflet, is that the cutting blade (apparently laser cut) can be turned around when one side becomes blunted and replaced if and when necessary. They even supply an Allen Key with which to change ...

Heavy domestic shredder gets it done.
Advantages: Good value for larger gardens Disadvantages: Like a Fiat it has a few plastic parts here and there!
Winter's a comin' and the garden is full to bursting with hedge prunings, leaves, old branches and other detritus. You could have a good old fashioned bonfire but you might burn hedgehogs! Noone (that I know of) wants this; neither do we really want to lug it to the tip.
Electric shredders have been frustrating in my experience. They seldom have the power to keep up when processing large volumes of affore mentioned detritus. I need something meaner.
... ...for this one. It was £100 cheaper then the equivlalent powered Eliet model and looked to me to be a more logical design than its Eliet or Mighty Mac peers in terms of clearing blockages (even a Timberwolf chipper can become blocked) and feeding.
The first thing you will notice is an industry strength Briggs & Stratton Intek engine with 6.5hp (3.65KW). This sounds like plenty until you use something like a Timberwolf with a 45hp turbodiesel engine, ...
