When the grass is as high as an elephant's eye
Advantages: Well built, wide range of optional attachments Disadvantages: Doesn't come with a mixer bottle
...electrical, or petrol powered. The Ryobi RLT30CESA falls into the latter category.
In it’s simplest form, a line cutter consists of some form of engine, a long pole with a mechanical linkage and a rotating spool at the other end which feeds nylon monofilament line.
When turning sufficiently quickly, the line is held taught by centripetal force, and can impart sufficient force to vegetation to cut through grass and shoots.
Electric trimmers are ... ...a petrol engine, and the Ryobi is one such example.
They’re currently updating their current range with a model with an electric start, however I recently bought mine in a sale with a conventional cord-pull starter.
Petrol trimmers generally use two stroke engines – these are lightweight and powerful, they have the disadvantage of needing a mixture of petrol and lubricant (known as two stroke oil, or ‘2T’) – you generally have to mix this in a ...

A real mean green trimming machine with the teeth of a crocodile
Advantages: lightweight, comfortable to use and very safe Disadvantages: none at all
...cable slicing the boffins at Bosch have brought out a cracking little device which will not only keep you from electrocuting yourself but also has the capability of doing a thorough job of most hedge rows.
** Technical bits first…
* Lightweight lithium Ion 18 volt battery with a 3 hour charge time and a near one full hour running time.
* It has a good size blade length of 520mm which are laser cut and diamond ground. * Dual handed safety switch ... ...the well known name of Bosch etched on the side I was very intrigued as to how these would perform, and when I got them home I decided to give them a go, (well, it was more like the the wife told me to cut the hedges).
So, after the recommended charge time I grabbed the trimmers and my step ladders and headed out into the back garden with this intention of cutting the hedges, although in the back of my mind I was sure that I would get about half ...

A Child's Power Toy
Advantages: Cheap, cheerful, ideal for trimming grass edges and smal gardens Disadvantages: Cheap and nasty, not man enough for the job, made out of inferior materials
I am currently on my second Black & Decker GL301 strimmer (“301”) so thought I would share my experience of the 301. My first 301 lasted about an hour and a half an hour before giving up the ghost and packing in. Whilst I did attempt to fix the 301, unfortunately it was beyond repair since many of the moving plastic bits had become so hot they melted and stuck together. You may ask how and why I got another 301, especially given the short life span ... ...bit of whinging to the retailer the manager of the store reluctantly agreed to give me a replacement. I could not get my money back, I was not offered an alternative and as there was no way the manager was going to give in (and I didn’t want to push her to the point the offer was totally withdrawn) so I reluctantly accepted another 301. However, this time I was in a fortunate position and knew how and when to use it and how to treat it to elongate ...

A Cut Above
Advantages: Easy to use - quieter than most Disadvantages: Battery operated
...a good idea!
This Bosch Hedge Cutter is the smaller of two similar models that they make, the only difference being a slightly shorter cutting length and a fraction lighter weight.
The first thing to do, of course, is to charge the battery. I found this battery smaller and lighter than the one on my previous hedge trimmer but even so the cutting time was substantially longer - averaging at 55 minutes instead of 30 on the old one. Charging time ... ...say that I was very impressed with the performance of this item. It was well balanced and easy to use and very much quieter than my old one. I found that it cut the hedge very easily - especially after the difficulty I had with the previous cutting efforts. The whole hedge was done in no time - as opposed to the two attempts I had to make for the previous cut. On an 'easier' hedge - privet for instance - the job would have been really simple. I had ...

Don't trim your beard with this one... it's only for the grass
Advantages: Light weight, easy to use and gives great results Disadvantages: the line can be fiddly at first, running out quite quickly
...protected by a very generous black semi circle of plastic, which does help protect you from any flying debris that you may hit, such as stones, sticks or even wild life. It has a good size cutting range to help you tackle those difficult stubborn areas where your mower wont reach, making your lawn look like the pitch at Wembley stadium, only without the hordes of angry fans throwing things at you. It may not be the tallest of strimmers but once you ... ...easy you can manoeuvre it round the garden, and with it weighing just over 3kg you’ll be able to cart it around for hours on end, although unless you’ve got a garden the size of Buckingham Palaces then you wont need to cart it round for hours.
In fact, for me, the hardest part of using this machine is when the line does run out and you have to add more onto the ‘spool, which I initially found that winding the line around it was a little tricky but, ...
