Garlic is easily grown from individual cloves, just like onions or shallots. You don't even need a windowbox, never mind a garden, for it will grow in a pot on a sunny windowsill.
However, beware using garlic from the supermarket shelf - most commercially grown garlic is treated with growth-regulating chemicals which will inhibit re-growth (although you may be lucky!).
Best to buy garlic as sets from the garden centre or one of the many good seed catalogues. But if you really want to do your own thing with the supermarket stuff, buy organic garlic and try growing that. It should be untreated and theoretically pure as the driven snow.

Interesting..... I plant single cloves and use the green shoots that grow. I haven't seen any bulbs growing in the ground, and maybe this is why. I just use supermarket garlic, maybe should try organic. It is surprising how flavoursome the green shoots are. My garlic has been planted for about 2 years now, and seems very easy.
Advantages: Dried marjoram can be stored for ages in the kitchen cupboard Disadvantages: Sometimes the fresh version can be sold out in the supermarket
