Garlic the stinking rose, Allium sativum

Its nearly Halloween so I thought I would write about Garlic it supposed to keep vampires and ghouls away so get prepared I will tell you a little about Garlic and how to grow it so you can be prepared

If you are trying to get pregnant and wish to conceive a girl then fable has it you must consume a lot of garlic Studies also show garlic in pregnancy helps prevent pre eclampsia and raises babies birth weight.

Garlic has been used as a health aid for many a year supposed to be good for the heart and for preventing colds.

Garlic is a member of the onion family, a bulb that grows under the soil. It can be quite easily grown.

First you need a garlic bulb, you can buy garlic for growing from garden centres they do grow better bulbs than the ones from a Tescos veg counter. If you are going to use one from tesco’s that’s fine but do choose a good big plump healthy clove to grow.

Detach the garlic cloves from the bulb each individual clove will develop in to a new bulb with many cloves attached.

Choose a spot in the sun not one that gets waterlogged or the bulb will rot.
A good time to start growing garlic is October it will give the bulb longer to mature and get plump. but they can be planted early spring .

First dig your ground over add a little organic matter, add a little bone meal and a little sand if you need help with drainage
Plant your garlic clove about an inch under the soil with the pointed end up the rounded end is the root end. Plant your garlic cloves about 4 inches apart to allow them to swell.
You can feed them with an all-purpose fertiliser in March, May.
In April seeing the green onion like leaves shooting up out of the earth will reward you
Water them if it is dry and in August the garlic bulbs should be fat and juicy ready for harvesting to add to your delicious meals to ward of evil spirits and keep you healthy.

Allium usinum is the wild garlic that grows in abundance in Cornwall this bulb can be eaten.

There are many dishes where you can add garlic to flavour it and make it delicious.

Garlic bread
Why people buy ready prepared garlic bread I will never understand there is nothing easier to make.
You need 1 French stick 100-175g /4-6oz butter or marge 2 crushed garlic cloves , salt and pepper. First cream the butter in a bowl until soft, add the garlic and a shake of salt And pepper beat them together. Then cut nearly through the loaf thick slices . Next spread lots of butter on the slices and wrap the loaf in foil and bake for abiout 15 minutes at gas 4 180 C serve its tasty.
Garlic is an essential ingredient to a spaghetti Bolognese so its great to have a clove or 2 handy. I love roasted garlic with chicken too.

Thanks for reading get your garlands of Garlic ready to ward of those evil spirits or put a garlic wreath on your door. Best wishes Mary

Great op. Sorry - can't stop, I'm off to Tesco's to find a really nice plump bulb for planting... :-)

What can I say about the opinion; Super. It's just the bit about babies getting heavier that causes concern. Not for me personally, I only have to hold hands and offer words of encouragement.
