Garlic is known as the wonder drug. It is a member of the onion, shallot and leek family. Garlic has been grown and used in the Mediterranean for thousands of years in cooking and remedies. Although it is just as easy to grow garlic in colder climates. I use garlic in most of the meals I cook for the flavour and because I know the benefits of it. Garlic is known and recommended by doctors to help lower cholesterol, it also helps protect against colds and flu. Garlic is also used as a mosquito repellent. If you crush or chop garlic do it over the pan or dish your using as the goodness is in the juice. Organic garlic not only has a better flavour but is higher in sulphate therefore is a more powerful antibiotic. Garlic is a wonderful antioxidant and will help get rid of the radicals in your body. The body does not build up a resistance against garlic so you can be sure it will always be doing you good. The only disadvantage of garlic is that it makes your breath smell and this can last for up to 4 days, so don't eat garlic before you go to the dentist!. You can buy garlic in capsule and tablet form if you don't like it but want the benefits. You can also buy odourless garlic tablets but I have been told in a health shop that these are not as affective as the juice is not used in them I don't know how true this is though. It seems the smelliest part of the bulb is also the most nutritious. These supplements cost between £1.99 + depending on the brand and place of purchase. They are widely available in supermarkets, health shops and chemists. Garlic is a wonderful culinary ingredient with lots of health benefits.
