MAP WITH EMAP

Advantages: Basic mapping
Disadvantages: Not detailed enough

This unit is a really good compromise between something for the road and something for walking with. The reason for that is that the unit is nice a small so you can hold in your hand (much smaller than something like the Street Pilot range). Also with this unit you can do some basic main road mapping but you won't be able to right down to street level. There are various versions of this unit available from just the unit for around £200 or complete with data card and data lead for around £250-£300. But you will need to get a mapsource cd for around another £100 to get any road detail at all. The unit is similar to the etrex in that you can store and name your waypoints and see where you are in relation to each of them. However you can store a lot more on this unit, how many will depend upon the size of the memory card you have ...

Review of Garmin eMap

Garmin Gremlin is back!

Advantages: gets me where i want to be
Disadvantages: a little quiet

on drives through Manchester city centre (where I almost always get lost) it hasnt sent me the wrong way once, yes admittedly it does occasionally miss mini roundabouts but this could be due to them being built since the last update of the stored maps, but vitally it has never missed a turn and has always taken me directly to my destination address, on journeys where I know other routes it quickly recalculates the routes according to the turnings I have chosen mid drive though you can set it to avoid certain roads, types of road or towns if you want it to. Personally I have a loatheing of the A1M which is unsurpassed by virtually anything else so the Skeeby drive was one I dreaded but when asking it to not put me on 'that' road it suggested a route via Harrogate avoding the majority of 'it' which was around 10 miles shorter but 20 mins longer ...
