“Cycling on the Edge”

published 28/08/2006

ProMany many functions, training centre info

ConsInfo overload, price, rubbish standard map

My other half is what you'd call a keen cyclist - he cycles about 25 miles a day commuting to work, and frequently goes on weekend training rides too. He's got a couple of cycle computers that show things like the time, distance, speed, and similar, but had been hankering after a Garmin cycle...

“"Edge"ing your bets.”

published 10/04/2006

ProFlexibility, Features, Size, Motivation

ConsCost

It never ceases to amaze me how things get increasingly complicated over time. Cars, telephones, stereos, televisions... they've all become more complicated since they were first invented. Maybe I shouldn't be so surprised that the same has happened with cycle computers... Maybe I'm not surprised...

“Gotta have a Garmin Edge 205”

Prowireless, accurate, can analyse data, water proof ...

ConsSometimes a loss of GPS signal, still quite expens...

Why I chose the Garmin Edge 205 **************************************** Being a bit of a gadget 'freak' I stumbled across one of these on a cycling accessories website but instantly dismissed it because of its price tag of £149.99. Being a recreational cyclist who would never enter a cycling...

ConsDelicate, poor reception.

I'm a keen mountain biker and I live in South Wales. Having used numerous cycle computers, I decided to go the whole hog and get something that would enable me not only to work out how far I'd been and at what speed, but also enable me to work out how much climbing I'd done, and to plot my route...

Super

Fantastic gadget for the cyclist. GPS tracking to record where you cycle and data which can be uploaded to various programs or the garmin motionbased web site. It can monitor your heartrate and set target heartrate zones to help improve fitness.

ProTraining data, lots of features

ConsPrice

I bought the 205 second hand due to the steep price when it's new. I think I've been quite lucky and it's been hardly used by the previous owner. Battery seems to last well over 7 - 8 hours between charges. The sattelite reception is good but sometimes takes a few minutes when finding reception...

Product Information : Garmin Edge 305

Manufacturer's product description

Take your ride to the next level with the Edge 305 - Garmin's GPS-enabled, personal trainer and cycle computer. From competitive road racing to mountain biking, the cyclist-friendly, lightweight Edge will help you achieve your personal best. With the easy-to-use Edge 305 on your bike, you'll always know where you're going and how far you've gone. For advanced cyclists, the Edge 305 comes packaged with either a heart rate monitor or wireless speed/pedaling cadence sensor to provide valuable feedback. Heart rate and speed cadence are also sold separately as accessories so you can incorporate both features into your training. In addition, the Edge 305 incorporates a barometric altimeter for extremely accurate elevation and vertical profile data. Recreational cyclists looking for the perfect touring companion and fitness partner will love the Edge 305. The Edge 305 with cadence includes a self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor so you can monitor your pedaling cadence as you ride. Like the heart rate monitor, the speed/cadence sensor uses the same robust wireless technology to measure and report your pedaling strokes per minute. With its waterproof, sleek design, the Edge is the perfect companion on any bike, and attaches to either the stem or handlebars. Its rugged case frames an easy-to-read, large, backlit display that can show up to eight different data fields along with altitude and a map view.
