I will not give the technical spiel about GPS: if you are in the market for one of these devices you already know.
I bought the legend colour last christmas originally it was to be the Black and white version but for an extra £60 you get colour screen and much larger memory at 24 MB. this is particularly useful if you are going to use this on the road, the maps can eat up your memory rapidly. I spend a lot of time in the back of beyond trekking and mountaineering, no it does not have an altimeter, but any mountaineer will have a seperate altimeter so as not to rely on what is effectively a gimmick. various reviews tell people the signal does not work in trees or on cloudy days, in my experience this is just not true. last year on the top of Tonquin valley in the Canadian rockies i was trapped in a white out blizzard(typical for the Canadian summer) and through horizontal driving snow and rain i had perfect reception thankfully, especially as i was nowhere near any of the marked tracks, which comes from following grisslies in the mist. I have been averaging battery life of approx 24-30 hours depending when sattelites kick in and out and use of back light. Garmin state up to 36 hours. i have personally tested the accuracyof this unit an dit is consistantly within 10 feet.
The legend c comes with a whole feast of extras (Bare in mind these are mostly gimmicks) including a sun and moon table suprisingly accurate, hunting and fishing table, calendar and a calculator! more useful extras are the proximity alarm useful when trekking and daydreaming saves over shooting your destination. and a comprehensive find facility useful for petrol stations shops etc,
On the down side being american it does not recognise a lot of our B roads and forget c roads and unclassified u roads these roads are shown as unpaved roads not very useful unless you know it is wrong, but one must not complain to loudly it isafter all not a sat nav.
Usb connection another additional feature over the black and white version means easy up and downloading of maps and routes.
Topo maps are available but are a little pricey, that said there are always black market copies available.
If interested in buying a hand held GPS search around i found this one priced from between £160-to over £300 in blacks and at an independant for nearly £400. THIS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE BUT DO NOT RELY ON IT BATTERIES GO FLAT. LEARN TO READ A MAP

Having been involved in challenge walks for a number of years, the temptation to buy one of these gizos grows. I think this is a good review. Certainly on the shopping list! Not sure about the grizzlies though! Understand about read a map!!
