I bought my Etrex Vista a couple of years ago now, and has prevailed as being one of my favorite toys for all that time. Build quality is second to none-surviving gruelling mountain bike rides in harsh weather conditions whilst mounted on the handlebars and still has barely a scratch on it. The soft grippy plastic lightweight construction also makes it a pleasure to use in the wet. Radio reception seems good (works fine on the dashboard of a car in built-up central london, and under wet trees in woodland), and software design/user interface was very easy to get the hang of. I loaded mine with detailed local maps quite easily, and the 24Mb memory seems enough to hold about half of the UK in high detail mapping. Battery life is good (running for at least 48hrs on NiMh batteries), and the serial data connection worked reliably. The software has many features I though I would never use, but I have ended up using it to its full extent. The internal digital compass and altitude meter also compliments the GPS data superby (and accurately), making the unit ideal for just about all uses imaginable. After much consideration I cannot fault this unit at all (and i'm not associated with its sales) and would recommend it as a highly reliable unit that can be trusted in any situation. Garmin obviously know their stuff and have done their customer research in designing this model.

The initial start up point is the map screen, this gives a 3D view of your current location at street level with your position maked with a green arrow. Your direction will most likely be incorrect unless you're pointing the same way you were when you switched it off. This is because GPS receivers cannot acertain which way you're pointing until you start to move. Some GPS units such as the GarmineTrexVista have a built in electronic compass and do not suffer from this problem. Unfortunately units with this feature are not for use in-car. However this doesn't normally cause a problem, because you're going to start moving, and it won't take long before the TomTom Go knows what's going on!

I've been looking for a pocket GPS for some time, primarily for use with a paper OS map when walking in the hills, but also as a basic navigation device in the car. My list of requirements were:
- can display positions in the British OS map grid units
- enough battery life for a day's walk
- can use rechargeable batteries
- comes with a built in basic road map
- can download additional maps via my PC
After reading many reviews of the models from Garmin and Magellan, the 2 most popular manufacturers of GPS units, I decided to go for the GarmineTrex Legend. It would have been nice to have a digital compass as fitted to the top of the range Vista model, but that would have added 50% to the price and it also consumes more battery power. The eTrex Vista combines a base map of North and South America, with a barometric altimeter and electronic compass. The compass provides bearing information while you're standing still and the altimeter determines your precise altitude. The Vista is also designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections. The eTrex Vista also boasts an internal memory capacity of 24 megabytes, which allows it to accept downloaded mapping data from Garmin's MapSource CD-ROMs, including Fishing Hot Spots. A silver case gives this unit a high-tech look. New to the product design, Garmin will include marine aids to navigation in addition to the base map. These navigational aids can be pre-loaded into each unit from the factory. This kit includes the international basemap.
