I am a commercial fisherman who relies on both exact and dependability in a Gps navigation aid.
The Garmin Gps 72 is a very dependable unit i use another brand on my boat while working and i have the gp 72 beside it and have found it to be a better unit allround, so i hear you all say, well this is why i mentioned my other unit, the other ones costs nearly £700 and is a fixed unit, with a smaller display.
My gp 72 cost me £130 and is handheld and portable, also with the correct lead available from Garmin you can download and update data from your computer or laptop.
I use mine for work when i am called out for the HM Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team that i am a member of and found it is very accurate and dependable.
It has a clear display excellent features easy to use menus and functions, setup is easy as all you have to do is turn it on and follow the on screen instructions also these are re-iterated in the handbook. It has M.O.B. function (Man Overboard ) this is if someone falls overboard you can hold this button to activate the function and it will remember the Latitude and Logitude position that the event happened at, not just for marine use say you are out walking the National Trust footpaths if at the start of your walk you push the MOB button then if you should get lost you can follow the track that the system leaves all the way back without any trouble or effort (apart from the walking that is).
It also lists all the main city's worlwide and can be totally tailored to your needs, ie land use, marine use, Latitude & Longitude (Marine). Grid Reference (Ordanace Survey Maps Land ).
Its waterproof and lightweight even with batteries fitted easy to read and use.
The only dis-advantage i have found is the wrist strap is maybe not quite tough enough as mine broke so i replaced it with one i made which was an easy job to find and fit.
My advice to anyone who needs one is to buy this one without hesitation.
On a cheap set of batteries it lasts approx 4-5 hours on the good batteries it will last me approx a couple of days.

Good review. I have one of these for mountain walking but to be honest very seldom use it, because it's fiddly to use and chews through the batteries. But my son borrowed it when he went back-packing in Mongolia and it was invaluable (maybe even lifesaving) in helping him find his way in the wilderness. Duncan

Sounds interesting , and the wrist strap is a bonus . It would save me taking my Tomtom Go out of the car ( I often use it to save me losing my car in large car parks .. how hopeless am I ?? )
