After much research I bought a Garmin Nuvi 300T from Amazon 5 weeks ago, at £169.99.
I went for this one as I wanted the free traffic warning system, which is sent via a silent FM channel. So you can see delays and ask the Sat Nav to divert you.

After much research I bought a Garmin Nuvi 300T from Amazon 5 weeks ago, at £169.99. I went for this one as I wanted the free traffic warning system, which is sent via a silent FM channel. So you can see delays and ask the Sat Nav to divert you. There is virtually no set up, you switch on and can enter a postcode, place of interest, restaurants, nearest petrol stations etc and get directed. Very easy, no experience needed at all.
A warning flashes up (and audio if you wish) when mobile or fixed speed camera are approaching. You get 30 days free updates then pay £39.99 a year for this. I found it very difficult to get in and out of the windscreen holder, needing to snap it hard with both hands to remove it, this is a little alarming!
The unit is the size of playing cards so very neat to hide away in your bag or pocket. There is only one lady's voice with no choice of upgrade, but it is clear and precise. The maps are clear with 2D or 3D options and directions are accurate, although it does like to take the through country lanes, which might be shorter, but not faster! If you ignore it, it quickly recalculates your route and doesn't tell you off!!
If you are a gadget freak like me you can plug it into your PC and customize it with various cars, bikes and monster truck free for download instead of a blue arrow directing you. You can put in your own photo as a start up screen. Download audible books or Mp3's for your journey (not advisable as tiny, horrid noise through the internal speakers!) You can buy new maps of other countries on SD card. There is a foreign language guide with key phrases.
The internal memory is 1GB so you don't need an SD unless you want foreign maps, but can add SD if you want to store lots of photos etc.
I was delighted with the unit and then went on a motorway journey so plugged in the traffic module (which cost about £70 more than the unit on its own). Nothing happened. It did not scan for a signal, or have a facitliy for me to scan for one. Just said…no traffic information available! Yet I know that stretch of the motorway, friends pick up the FM Traffic signal. I tried several times then searched online. To my horror, forums are full of complaints that none of the Garmin TMC units work, Garmin know about it, and still sell them! I emailed Garmin, they told me to update the software, I did and after that their software refused to recognise my unit was plugged in. I googled it and found this is another known fault with the Garmin units! I emailed Garmin back and was told I would have to pay return registered post (£6) and they would keep the unit 4 weeks and fix it! Yet I know from forums that they can't fix the traffic bit!
I emailed Amazon ands they offered to pay the postage and give me a full refund! So sadly I sent it back, had a full refund plus postage, and ordered a Tom Tom with their new traffic unit, which is said to work, after their old one didn't!
How sad, as the Nuvi really is a lovely little unit that works very well! But what appalling customer care, why are the company continuing to sell the traffic units at £70 when they know they won't work? Why should a customer pay return postage too?
So if you just want a neat Sat Nav I would recommend this (apart from the windscreen mount!?), and update manually as the Garmin software seems to have lots of complaints about it! On the other hand, why bother if Tom Tom does the job at the same price, and its software works, and its windscreen mount is slid in and out!
Advantages: Ease of use,Slim,Accurate Disadvantages: Tinny speakers when playing MP3's
...Theres a link on the Garmin website to this if you want more info.
Great if you have active kids to entertain and geocaches are everywhere. Ive found 10 within half an hours walk from my house. These positions can be downloaded to your set from the website (and don't forget to print off the clues).
Also from your pc you can download/change or delete mp3 and picture files.Athough the internal speakers are a bit tinny in the car but not as bad outdoors.you ... ...most digital cameras.
Another simple but usefull display feature (for me anyway) is it tells you your ETA so you know if youre late for work even if you dont need directions.
Although this is my first owned (not borrowed) sat nav I've used others and think I can happily recomend this unit to anyone. ...

Purchasing the Garmin Nuvi.....
I bought this unit for my girlfriend as a present sometime back in the hope that it would help her find the exit out of that proverbial paper bag. At the time of purchase, I had narrowed my choice down to two satellite navigation systems that both fell well within my price range; the Tomtom One and the Garmin Nuvi 300, both of which contained GB maps only. Based on my previous experience in using handheld GPS units ... ...that Garmin are well represented within the GPS world, I chose the Nuvi over the Tomtom. I was made further confident of my choice when I found the unit for approx £30 less than the TomTom One. Initial impressions....
On receipt of the unit I was impressed with just how small and neat it was - I was, after all, comparing this unit to the rather cumbersome TomTom 300, which I had been using for the past 2 years or so. In terms of aesthetics, the ...

I bought this as a last minute item for £149 on my way to see relatives.
The traffic and weather were both horrendous and I couldn't imagine trying to follow my routeplanner printout!!
I got it out the box, plugged it in, attached it to the bracket and away I went. The display was easy to read, the voice was clear and 90 minutes later I arrived. I think what sold it to me was the fact that once charged you could use it for up to 8 hours without ... ...for the kids DVD players.
It had a really funky option of changing the car design that you see on the screen.
We used it to go further and touring Wales it was a godsend. It recognised Points of Interest, it recognised 99% of place names and postcodes I put in (yes all this and it has full postcode search too!!) Most importantly when I missed a turning (fairly often) it redirected me without any hassle at all.
It had the whole of UK on it with ...

Quick review of Garmin NÜVI 300
I bought one in Comet for £99.99.
Pros.: It is light, descent design, easy to carry in pocket. Has strong signal and works even inside house.
Cons.: Does not show car's current speed, distance to destination, PIO's along the road. The colour of the maps can not be changed. (The pink leading colour is annoying) ;-(
All in all it is good combination of price and quality. ...

Quick review of Garmin NÜVI 300
Driving on the M6 towards Warwick, Nuvi sent me towards junction 4A instead of jundtion 4 which is easier and it kept on trying to make me turn round at the nest roundabout so as to get back to junction 4A take this junction after recalculating. Is there a method y which i can instruct it to take me through a less crowded route?
How can i make it say turn "right into Joe Blogg Street" instead of just "turn right"?

Advantages: Text to Speech, Bluetooth, GTM Trafficmaster, MP3 Disadvantages: In car connector a bit fiddly.
Having just purchased the Garmin StreetPilot c550t, as an upgrade to the nuvi300. I have road tested it over the past few days, in differing locations, from wide open spaces to built up valley areas. I can say that this GPS performs superbly well and is a front runner for in car satelite navigation, at a great price. Having used TomTom, Mio, Navman and Garmin, I find there is no comparison, Garmin seem to be the current leader in GPS navigation and this has to be high on the "must have" list of gadgets. Very user friendly and easy to operate.
Working straight from the box, the satelite signal was locked on within a minute, from cold start, in a built up valley location The unit even picks up a clear signal indoors, (obviously I would not guarantee this for everyone). No flip-up antenna, which is a plus. Text to speech is a great ...
