Having just purchased the Garmin StreetPilot c550t, as an upgrade to the nuvi 300. I have road tested it over the past few days, in differing locations, from wide open spaces to built up valley areas. I can say that this GPS performs superbly well and is a front runner for in car satelite navigation, at a great price. Having used TomTom, Mio, Navman and Garmin, I find there is no comparison, Garmin seem to be the current leader in GPS navigation and this has to be high on the "must have" list of gadgets. Very user friendly and easy to operate. Working straight from the box, the satelite signal was locked on within a minute, from cold start, in a built up valley location The unit even picks up a clear signal indoors, (obviously I would not guarantee this for everyone). No flip-up antenna, which is a plus. Text to speech is a great addition, keeping your eyes on the road and not on the screen. Voice instructions are generally clear, some more than others. Different voices are available to download free, from the Garmin website. The c550 is pre-loaded with UK and European mapping, plus safety camera warnings and points of interest. Bluetooth connectivity works seamlessly with different phones. Built in GTM traffic master system only serves to make your journey more enjoyable although improving, the signal for traffic updates is not always available in all areas. When travelling on motorway routes, the traffic signal was active at all times. Rural locations proved intermittent, but that is not a fault with the unit. Full 7 digit postcode search, or search by address, when travelling you can pinpoint your location and store it in favourites, you can also add "via" routes to your journey. Good clear sounds, the MP3 functionality plays back your tunes well, through twin rear speakers which cope pretty well with music, for its size. It is not a boom box, nor was it designed to be. The SD memory slot allows you to store and play tracks to your hearts content. Volume control is easy, with a side wheel, rather than tapping the screen repeatedly. The anti-glare display is super clear and bright, even in direct sunlight. Battery life is excellent, claiming up to 8 hours. The in car connector is a little fiddly at times. There is no e-book, travel guide function or picture viewer, none of which detracts from the main purpose of a GPS, to get you to your destination with minimal hassle. Well worth purchasing.
