... Garmin was one of the GPS devices I looked at when deciding which sat nav to go for. I actually went for the TomTom. As I compared several models I feel I am qualified to write a review on this Sat Nav.
Garmin is well known for Satnav, but they also make Mobile phones, Laptops, PDAs, 2 way radios, and even dog tracking systems. They do echo sounders for boats, as well as chartplotters, fishfinders, and even radar sets. They are a "new" company (1989) and have a stong foothold in the navigation market.
Garmin call this a personal travel assistant, this is an entry level job, but I tend to think that is just a marketing trick to make you want the next model. The device comes already pre-loaded with maps covering the whole of Europe. It has the usual touch screen and is of course very slim. The database is already loaded with Points Of Interest. You are able to choose 2D or 3D maps th suit yourself, I prefer three dimensional but it is down to personal choice.
It is simplicity to operate, I usually advocate reading instructions before using anything, but in this case, I am saying "play with it, have fun, get used to it, THEN read the instructions to get the best out of the device.
As for "toys" - these are facilities you get but do not really need - you will find a Jpeg viewer, a world time clock, with time zones, currency converter. calculator etc. You also get an anti theft lock. There are different vehicle icons to customise your model, you can choose between a monster truck, a motorbike, or ever a jetsk! Other options include a tank, and even Santa's sleigh!.
You also have many other customise type settings, like changing colours to suit ambient lighting, full control over all sounds etc. You get to set warnings whenever you want them, for instance youre own POIs.
As for its limitations, there are very few, I could say it does not "do" Bluetooth, but that would really be pedantic, I could argue that the battery life should be more, but in reality, these devices are always on charge. The marketing seems to be copied from TomTom, came to think of it they do "My Garmin" and the other one does "My TomTom" and I have no idea who was first. I can recommend both of these, and I just hope I am not asked to choose between the two. Perhaps I should update my TomTom review, and perhaps I would actually advocate going for the Garmin.
