Choosing a suitable sunblock can be a tricky business. Every time I need to buy a new one I’m completely non-plussed by the range that is available and also the huge cost. I always end up buying the same one because I don’t feel able to spend a lot of money on something new that is an unknown quantity. I have a theory that whatever is designed to be spread on a child’s skin is certainly likely to be suitable for my skin too. That is why for the last few years I’ve been using Garnier Ambre Solaire for Kids (Spf 50₊).
The lotion is described as a very high protection moisturising milk which is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. It is claimed to protect against sun-induced skin damage and is water and sand resistant. It also claims to conform 100% to European recommendations for protection against the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. On the reverse of the bottle it very wisely advises against over-exposing babies and children to direct sunlight and gives directions on when to apply the sunscreen.
I have no desire to get a suntan at the cost of the risk of skin cancer and prematurely aged skin. Consequently I wear the sunscreen during the summer and the winter. The lotion is white and a little oily, but spreads easily into the skin. Although it can leave a bit of a shine on the face, it is very moisturising and leaves the skin feeling soft. In very hot weather my skins does eventually go brown, but at a much slower rate. I know the lotion definitely helps to prevent burning because on the odd occasion I have missed a bit of skin, it shows up afterwards.I am unable to comment on its value for use on young children’s skins (for which it is actually recommended) but if my children were still young, I would certainly use it on them.
Compared to some other sunscreens, I consider it to be very reasonably priced from £6.50 onwards for a 200ml bottle. It is widely available from Boots, Superdrug and supermarkets and very often on special offer so you can get two for the price of one – quite handy if you use it every day or need it for a whole family.
