Review of Lake Wobegon Summer 1956 - Garrison Keillor by Finno

Advantages: Just Fun, smiles & memories
Disadvantages: None

...I've heard many of Garrison's cassette tapes, and many of his stories. I've heard him on the radio doing his 'old country shows". Read some of his books. And, all I can say is this. If you like country living, if you are tired of talk about mass murderers and the latest in the Gulf War, if you don't want to hear about any more violence or what happened where to whom in the form of gossip, if you just want to read or listen to something DIFFERENT ..then Garrison Keillor is just the thing for you . If you want to smile and laugh and just remember the good old times when people liked people and nobody hated anyone and no one was suing anyone, then Garrison Keillor books or cassettes or cds will do the trick for you . If you laugh and giggle when you hear the old time radio commercials about snake oil and silly old things... Read review

A Student Responds to his Teacher
Review of Staggerford - John Hassler by rahfl

Advantages: a thought provoking novel spiced with wry humor
Disadvantages: you will love or hate the conclusion

...Irish wit, but he is certainly not a light-weight writer. The novels of Jon Hassler have been compared favorably with Sherwood Anderson, Flannery O’Conner, and Garrison Keillor. Hassler certainly shares the bitter sweet tone of Anderson and O’Connor. And characters such as Coach Gibbs would be at ease on the streets of Keillor’s Lake Wobegone. I leave it up to more objective readers, however, to determine whether this quite popular novel ultimately rises above regionalism and belongs to the world. This is the most thoroughly ironic of Hassler’s novels (and for my money, it is his best work). The novel has remained popular in the US, primarily because of word of mouth advertising. Many who have been put off by the jarring conclusion of Staggerford have enjoyed his other works, especially The Love Hunter, and the previously mentioned... Read review

This isn't an English lesson, but..
Review of Writing short stories by mailmekm

Advantages: You can earn money, improve your writing skills and it's fun!
Disadvantages: It's hard to think of a plot, and you may be turned down by Publishers.

...Cliff, past the pizza joints, Al's used-car lot, Red Cliff County Trust, the Inn, the old brick storefronts, and onto Green Street, and into my garage." -Garrison Keillor, Wobegon Boy. 3rd person: "Harry wished he had about eight more eyes. he turned his head in every direction as they walked up the street, trying to look at everything at once." -J.K.Rowling, Harry Potter. -Tense. There are two main tenses used in story writing, past and present. For example- 1. I went downstairs, and got a drink from the kitchen. - Past 2. I go downstairs, and get a drink from the kitchen. - Present Most stories are written in the past tense (it's easier to write in), but you can use the present tense as well. It doesn't really matter which you choose, as long as you choose one and stick to it. Don't change from one tense to another, or the reader will get... Read review
