Gaston Mazzacane the 25 year old Argentinian driver is that country's only representative in Formula I. The young Gaston raced in karts in his home country and also participated in Formula 3 in Latin America. He was a test driver with Minardi and last season appeared as the No 2 driver in the underfunded Italian team. He did not score any points-which was no great surprise- and he found himself continously starting and finishing at the back of the grid. This,however,should not be attributed to Gaston's racing ability for basically he was in a highly uncompetitive car. During one race he was actually in the top 10,but that was mainly because half the field had been eliminated either by accidents or mechanical problems to the cars. Some of the Argentinian's scraps at the tail end,however, were quite impressive for a newcomer and his reputation started to climb.

For the 2001 sason Gaston is driving for the Prost Grand Prix team. He could do reasonably well in this season's races providing a better developed chassis and a more power from the engine enable him to battle some of the mid order teams Frankly though it remains to be seen,based on the evidence of the first two Formula I races,whether the Prost AP04 will be really competitive.I do not expect Gaston to get any podium positions,although he might gain an odd point or two. I also do not think Gaston will be able to realise his considerable potential until he is in a more competitive car. Even then I do not view this popular driver from the Argentine as a potential world champion,rather I would assess him as a potential mid-order driver.
