But take Gateway for example. Our PC cost £1600 with 3 years warranty. And up to now it hasn't broken down once. It may be a bit slow but that's not the point. A PC has to be reliable and out of all the PC's i've used, i have found Gateway to be most reliable.

Is this a good quality PC or is it just too expensive to what it actually offers?
Well let me tell you. I have a Gateway 2000 P5-120. It's only 120MHz and only 16mb of Ram with a 1.5GB hard drive. My father bought it 6 years ago for the whole family to use and at that time this was a high spec pc. But if you compare that to todays PC's then it's just plain trash. Well todays PC crash too many times and freeze up too many times. Take TIME for instance. My friend has had to change his TIME computer 3 times now because it keeps on breaking down. It's either the motherboard breaking or the power supply. It's a new story everytime that repeats itself on different victims.
But take Gateway for example. Our PC cost £1600 with 3 years warranty. And up to now it hasn't broken down once. It may be a bit slow but that's not the point. A PC has to be reliable and out of all the PC's i've used, i have found Gateway to be most reliable.
You may see ads on TV with low price PC's and a free digital camera with a free printer and scanner running on a fast pentium 3 with 20gb hard drive all for a low price of £699.99 and you may think "wow that's cheap" and your most probably going to buy that PC or a similar CHEAP PC. Well think about it. Why is it cheap? Ask the sales person. Ask him "why a Gateway PC running at 900MHz with 10GB hard drive and 64MB ram is more expensive than a TINy, TIME etc. computer that offers 1.5GHz with a 40GB hard drive and 128MB ram with a printer, scanner and digital camera?" He'll most probably say "don't know" or might say that Gatewat are ripping you off only because of the commission he will get by selling that PC to you. He would never say "It's because Gateway have a high reputation in offering great quality PC's with a high quality customer support". If your going to get a PC and your on a budget then do yourself a favour and save money to buy a more expensive PC that offers maybe lower quality performance but a high quality service.
Once my computer was infected by 7 viruses which I had under control until something went wrong, and I was only testing a software I made on them. My Desktop disappeared. The start button and evrything else disappeared and everytime I entered my password to log on, an error message came up (after logging on) saying that I have to reinstall Windows. Well with important documents and over 500 telephone numbers stored their was no chance of me doing that before they were saved. I managed to back up all by myself by getting pressing the windows button on my keyboard instead of logging on to access all my files and use my computer in a weird twisted way. Anyway after backing up i had no clue on formatting the computer and installing drivers and a hell of a lot of other things. Anyway for 5 straight long hours i was on the phone with Gateway technical support in america but it was a free phone number so i wasn't bothered. They talked be through everything. And when I had to wait for something long to load etc. we basically had a normal conversation about computers. They were very friendly, funny and most importantly helful. My computer is now running better than before. That's what you call technical support.
Anyway to end this opinion, what I'm trying to say is that don't be fooled by companies trying tricking you into buying cheap computers that can't tell the difference from RAM and ROM...use your commen sense and buy a descent computer from one of the bigger and more powerful companies like Gateway that focus on the customer and not money.
Gateway website: www.gw2k.co.uk (You can build your own PC their as well).
Advantages: Excellent service, free advice for the life of the computer Disadvantages: A little slow to get through, put on hold for a while
...as I wasn't paying.
Also, Gateway staff are very courteous and personable, vene when I was irate about the glitch (my computer was barely 3 days old at the time).
I would advise people to think very carefully when purchasing a PC about things like this - Gateway will even offer advice for stuff they do not support, though it may not be the most effective advice. The value of a freephone support line cannot be underestimated, and is worth paying ...

Advantages: High performance, reliability. Good value-for-money. Disadvantages: None
I invested in a Gateway Performance 650 system some 4 months ago. I purchased an Epson Perfection 610 scanner, and a HP Deskjet 840C printer separately to get away from the "cheap" packages offered by most of the popular retailers who include only low performance printers and scanners as a part of the deal. I went for a 30Gb hard drive at small incremental cost. The promise of delivery within 7 days was beaten by 2 days! The system was easy to instal, ... ...to date.
I feel the Gateway machine may not appear on the surface to be amongst the cheapest, but if the price of the cheapo peripherals is taken out of many of the "packages" on offer, the Gateway machine does offer good value for money. The consumers association also rate it as one of the most reliable, whereas the "cheaper package machines" suffer from reliability problems. This is borne out in discussions with friends and acquaintances who would ...

Advantages: Excennent machine. The best value for money. Disadvantages: None that we have found so far!
We have a Gateway 650 performance computer which we bought 4 months ago. We decided on this one for several reasons;
1.Comparing it with the packages available from the likes of Currys, PC World, Time etc it seemed to be only slightly more expensive if you discounted the cheap printers and scanners which are included with most of these packages. We went for a much better quality scanner and printer, and when we looked at the Ccheap" packages, and ... ..."Which" report on computers placed Gateway near the top for quality. Those supplied by Time, Tiny, and Currys were well down the lists of reliability and service standards.
3.Experiences of many of our friends confirmed that Gateway werte amongst the best performing machines, and represented the best value for money.
We are sure that we made the right decision with our experience to date! ...

Advantages: Value, free technical support, easy to set up, option to trade in after two years Disadvantages: Software, instruction manual
I bought my Gateway Performance 500LS in January 2000. I chose Gateway because the company came near the top of a Which? report for reliability, and also you can trade in the computer after two years, towards the cost of a new one. I was going to choose a computer from Time or Tiny because of the amount of software which comes with their systems, but those companies came near the bottom of the Which? report.
So far my Gateway, has proved reliable ... ...computer is good value, and I would recommend this computer for a second-time buyer, who has a basic knowledge of computers. I would buy from Gateway again, and I'm looking forward to trading in my present computer in a couple of years time towards the cost of a new one. ...

Advantages: Good Build Disadvantages: Speed slow. P4 soon will be out of date
i brought a Gateway 1400 P4 in December 2000. It broke down a couple of days later. I contacted Gateway and they said they would send an engineer. The engineers failed to appear twice before Christmas, and having brought my 3 son loads of software, this was very distressing.
Enginners arrived in Jan2001 and couldn't fix it. Gateway now refused to take it back stating I had gone outside the 15 day return. Their customer services are very rude very ... ...wrote, and wrote, and rang and rang, and after another 2 weeks thay agreed to take it back, two weeks after having it back they re-imbursed me. Costing me £52 in interest. I still havn't received a letter in reply to my complaints some 6 weeks later.
Their motto is "People Rule" can they add ..."But customers stink!!"
By the way when the computer did work it was dissappointing. Graphics were average, speed average, easily beaten by 1200 athlon, ...
