Advantages: One small package that does everything a big desktop system can do. Disadvantages: Internal modem not very fast - get a PCMCIA card

Various configurations of the Gateway Solo 9300 are available - mine has a Pentium III 600MHz processor with 160Mb SDRAM and 12Gb hard drive. I bought it to replace a different manufacturer's laptop that short circuited and blew up in my face 12 days after the warranty expired! I had been tempted by what had looked like a bargain offer in a local newspaper. False Economy!! I should have gone to Gateway in the first place, having already had good experience with them in my previous job and at university. With Gateway you definitely get what you pay for - a top quality product that should last a lifetime. However, I've taken out the optional 3 year return to base extended warranty just in case.
The Gateway Solo 9300 is perfect for the course work I'm doing for a part-time Master's Degree in music - I use mainly word processing, spreadsheet, music notation and graphics software and a USB scanner - and, of course, I regularly connect to the Internet.
I do a lot of music editing and arranging with this laptop and find the quality of sound reproduction very satisfactory.
Being able to connect easily to a TV is perfect for presentations. It's also easy to download images from my camcorder.
The battery life is pretty good - I take it into dark recesses of library storerooms where there are no sockets to plug into and it hasn't let me down yet.
I carry it around in my rucksack at university and on trips to other libraries and museums, and it is standing up very well to the rough treatment that it receives.
It's well worth saving up for one of these.

I wrote this review in 2001. It's now July 2005 and I am STILL very happy with my Gateway Solo 9300XL. It's doing just great!
If you want a laptop as a desktop replacement this is the fella.
Features
--------
It has about a 16" screen, supports two monitors simultaneously (LCD + monitor or LCD + TV)
Has TV in and out, digital audio out, DVD Rom, floppy 2* USB, firewire
Built in modem, 2* PCMCIA, Touchpad. Hardware controls for DVD/CD and volume.
What I am trying to say is that this laptop has everything.
PIII 600 or 700, 128 MB RAM standard, 8MB video.
What more ... ...desktop.
Add the docking station, a huge monitor, printer, scanner etc. and your laughing.
The laptop has another two USBs, parallel, serial, digital audio, speaker socket, microphone socket, line out etc.
Build quality is good. Battery life is acceptable.
The only gripe I have is that they have removed the IR port.
When I ordered it, it was included in the spec. but when it arrived it wasn't there. They only put IR into their bottom of the ...
