Generation X - Douglas Coupland

... A reputation almost entirely earned with this break through novel; ‘Generation X’. Unfortunately, Jpod was so annoyingly self-regarding, so out of touch with the 21st century that I felt almost personally insulted that I had been so duped – hence my disproportionate loathing. Still, once bitten ... Read review

Generation X - Douglas Coupland

Advantages: An intelligent read
Disadvantages: A bit on the light side

...this trouble and actually read Generation X, the book that created a reputation and (supposedly) defined an age. No pressure then.

Actually, there wasn’t much pressure at all to be honest. Preconception is a capricious beast and my high expectations had all been used up with Jpod to the point where I approached this book expecting to be let down and ready to sneer from the outset.

The problems with Jpod were manifold ...
...A lurid pink edition of Generation X, freshly read, sitting in front of me and I am left to wonder was it any good or have I totally wasted another £7.99 (less my wife’s 10% teachers discount).

Well, the good news is that I didn’t waste my money and Coupland has gone some way to redeeming himself in my all-important eyes. This book is a lot better than his later effort, largely (although not entirely) free from gimmickry it is a more ... more

GENERATION X: Tales for an accelerated culture

Advantages: Quirky and beautiful tales of life
Disadvantages: The neo-logisms may distract you

...book that introduced the term Generation X to an international audience. The term was used to describe children born to ex-hippy parents in the 70’s. These are the parents who cared devoutly about everything and voiced this in numerous protests, rallies, songs and placards throughout the 60’s and 70’s, before selling out their ideology on an unprecedented scale so absolutely, to embrace the ‘greed is good’ 80’s and to systemically rape the environment ...
...Regan, they represent the lost generation – Generation X”. I couldn’t have put it more eloquently myself … as you probably noticed! The three main characters of the book are Andy, Dag and Claire who decide to quit their dreary lives to drift around the lower seedier end of Palm Springs and have picnics and tell each other stories and live ‘Elvis moments’. These are three very precocious young adults, but then weren’t we all at that age? The life ...

Douglas Coupland - creater of modern classics

Advantages: A great social commentator
Disadvantages: his later books are not as good

I love Douglas Coupland. He is definately one of today's most important and influential authors. His novels include the modern classic Generation X, (1991) Life after God (1994) Girlfriend in a coma, (1997) All families are psychotic, (2001) Hey Nostradamus (2003) and many more. He has also written some non-fiction such as 'Polaroids from the Dead' and 'city of glass'. He is an amazing visionary and there really is no-one else writing like him. His post-modern approach to story telling is beautiful, moving and often very funny. He has been described as a visionary and important social commentator. A Canadian born in 1961, he has studied art and design all over the world. He also creates art and even makes his own furniture. Truley a creative talented man. His later novels such as Microserfs and JPod are (obviously ...

Review of Girlfriend in a Coma - Douglas Coupland

The world created by Bill

Advantages: contemporary, clever and original
Disadvantages: the characters are a little cold and the story isnt always clear

Douglas Coupland marked himself out as an exciting talent with his fantastic Generation X a few years ago and Microserfs does nothing to diminish that reputation. Again taking a group of thirtyish American Generation Xers, this time computer programmers at Microsoft, the story sees them leaving the company to set up their own business based around an idea for a new software package. Brimming with insight, originality and ideas, Coupland creates real characters in a well-written story which is quite unique and comes highly recommended to anyone open to something new and a little bit different, but Couplands Generation X is a better novel. ...
