Advantages Big and tasty

Disadvantages None

Ever since pancake day, myself and my partner have had a craving for pancakes in an evening. Rather than cooking them from fresh each night, which I admit we did get sick of doing rather quickly, I now just buy some ready made pancakes in and store them in the freezer for when our cravings arise!

A couple of weeks ago I visited Sainsburys for the first time in a while and found some Genesis Crafty Big Pancakes on offer. I generally shop in Tescos, so I had never seen these before but thought we would give them a go.

Genesis pancakes aren't the same as traditional pancakes, they are more like scotch pancakes you see the shelves, just a lot bigger. Each pancake measures around 4" in diameter, in comparison to a standard pancake which is around 2.5" in diameter. These have a nice thickness to them too, which obviously a normal pancake doesn't. These pancakes have an almost cake-like spongy texture to them. The best way to cook these is to grill them. When cooked thoroughly you have a slightly crispy, golden brown exterior with a light spongy white centre. Due to the extra thickness, you find that these don't fall apart as easily as others do when removing them from packing and cooking.

These pancakes are completely round and measure just a few millimetres in thickness. Since these are of a different breed to traditional pancakes, then sugar and lemon don't really go too well with these. Just a bit of butter or jam will suffice, or as a treat then a bit of vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce make these a lovely, if unhealthy treat. I like the fact that when grilled, these pancakes don't taste in any way dry. I have had this happen with similar pancakes before, but these have a slight moistness to them which combats any dryness.

In a pack you get six decent sized pancakes. These generally cost £1.19 a pack, though at present in Sainsburys you can get them on offer for 89p, which I think is really good value for money. These are light, yet filling. One desn't really sufficiently fill you up, but two does the trick and doesn't leave me feeling bloated, like other bread based products can.

These go down well with kids too and can make a nice little snack for them, rather than giving them sweets and crisps.

Packaging wise, these are quite basic. You simply get a small clear plastic tray, in which the pancakes sit. These are then wrapped within a clear cellophane wrapper bearing the black and yellow Genesis Crafty Big Pancakes logo across the front. It is a simple form of packaging, though quite eye-catching too. You can find these down the breaded products aisle of Sainsburys supermarket.

They are described as 'crafty' as they claim to craft their products by hand to create a different taste and texture to other similar products on the market.

For those of you who suffer with allergies, these pancakes do contain gluten, wheat, eggs, milk and soya though the are suitable for vegetarians. They may also contain traces of nuts and sesame seeds.

We zap these in the micro for about 30 seconds, then pour on warm Maple Syrup as these are more similar to American pancakes than the UK kind. Very addictive!
