Manufacturer's product description

When you have mountains of pages to print, nothing takes care of your workload like the Genicom 5180 series line matrix printer. With speeds up to a blistering 1,800 lines per minute, this workhorse makes short work of data processing, industrial graphics, multipart forms, mail labels, orders, and invoices. Genicom's legendary rugged design means you don't have to worry about downtime - even in the harshest environments. Paper out, paper jams, and ribbon sensors allow you practically fail-safe and unattended printing. Low-cost consumables, user-replaceable print heads, and maintenance-free operation keep cost of ownership low. Choose from a wide variety of models. All models come standard with IEEE 1284 parallel and RS232/422 interfaces as well as IGP/QMS graphics languages. Two additional I/O slots are present in each unit, where optional, easily installed Ethernet and IBM twinax/coax connectivity solution cards may be added. These I/O slots provide for your current and future networking needs. With hot port switching between all ports, flexible paper handling, and numerous choices in emulations, it's easy to find the right model for your application. The 5180 series is among the first line printers to take advantage of Genicom's newest Intelliprint controller architecture, which protects your investment by allowing fast, easy upgrades as your network connectivity requirements evolve. Pluggable I/O modules can be installed in a matter of minutes, and printer firmware flash ROM is updateable with each printer individually or via your network.

Very Good Basic Dot Matrix Printer
Review of OKI Microline 321 by  MartinImber

Advantages: Quick reliable dot matrix printer
Disadvantages: Just remember it is a dot matrix

...I have used these printers on and off for over 12 years. They are generally reliable and good for a 9 pin dot matrix. Some early ones had problems with weak drive gears, but later ones are fine. I had to go through about 50 of these looking for dodgy gears and replacing them!!!!! They support both IBM and EPSON control codes and have an easy to use menu which prints as it goes. They are available with both Centronics and RS232 sockets. Extras include various tractor feed modules. For business use with pre printed stationary they are excellent and are my favourite DMP. Scoring Picture Quality, well it is a dot matrix hence poor. it is also mono. In general OKI printers are very good, we have a colour laser at work which is very good and I will review it and the bigger version we get our customers to buy. My only concerns... Read review

Older technology can still have its uses
Review of OKI Microline 380 by  richard_richard

Advantages: Reliable, speed of response
Disadvantages: Not very flexible, no graphics support

...The OKI 380 is a dot-matrix 24 pin monochrome printer. We make use of a number of these printers at the company I work for. They will retail for around the £250-£300 mark, depending on the supplier you use. Dot-matrix printers have been around for many years and this type of printer was really the first kind that most people would have seen in offices, appearing along side the early desktop computers. However, technology quickly moves on and these printers were superseded by the invention of the laser printer. These days it is rare to see this type of printer in a normal office environment as the laser printer is a much more flexible machine. However, the technology although old still has its uses. The reason why dot-matrix printers have not yet gone the way of the Dodo is because for certain uses they have one distinct advantage... Read review

Caution with Mesh
Review of Mesh Matrix XP 1800+ by  Consumer56

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: many

...Never mind what computer you plan to buy, my purchase with Mesh was an absolute disaster. The machine arrived not setup and with parts missing. They dont respond to anything written, be it email or faxes so you have to wait on their chargeable line to speak to anyone. 3 goes and they never got it right at all, so sought a refund but only after threat of legal action as they wouldnt have had a leg to stand on. Im sure they must get some right but I saw no evidence of that with our machine so buyer beware and as much as I would like to say something nice about them, I cant think of anything to recommend them and from reports Ive seen Im not the only one...
