ESSEX - It's a big place, You'll need this map! THIS REVIEW HAS BEEN REPUBLISHED! All ratings/comments not here anymore. =(

>> About <<:

Having lived in south Essex for many years (since I was born) I have learned my way around the county pretty well, but Essex is just downright humungous, and even if you know the quickest route from Billericay to Colchester, it might be jammed. I got so fed up coming home from work on the A127 to Southend-on-sea that I bought this to find multiple routes around the most congested areas. It’s shaved ages off my journey home, and I haven’t spent a penny on a useless sat nav.

Essex is HUGE! and regardless of how long you’ve lived there or how well you know it, this is still a very handy book for reference!

>> Ease of use <<:

The atlas is a little confusing when reading roads near the edge of the page, I often finding myself having to jump 5 pages ahead to get to the next sector of the map. Not to mention, this thing doesn’t display country “farm” tracks, which I have been known to sneak down when I can’t bothered to go up the A127.

One feature that made me buy this over any of the other Essex atlases was the fact that it displays where speed cameras are. Now I have a speed trap locator (Road Angel) but I regularly forget to charge it. So having the Atlas to hand is always great for avoiding those speeding tickets!

Not only this but lists points of interest. If you look carefully at the stupidly small 2pt font, you can also see what the place names are. E.g.: Adventure Island in Southend on sea is shown with a Ferris wheel followed by “Adventure Island” in red italics.

Primary routes are shown in dark green, and B roads are shown in orange. Motorways are shown in blue. One great thing about this atlas is that it does have a 1” to 1-mile scale, but in built up town centres, to make things easier for you; there is a 3” to 1-mile scale. Brilliant, something worth getting for those who get stuck in Romford! That place is a NIGHTMARE!

>> Quality <<:

The spiral design on this atlas bends very easily, and is quite flimsy. Also, the paperback cover is laminated, but still becomes dog-eared and torn just through normal use. Inside though, the ink is perfect. I have gotten this wet before in the rain, and the ink didn’t run, and the paper remained in good condition, so nice and durable on the inside!

This atlas is super accurate, and shows the EXACT point at which speed cameras are placed. Sadly it doesn’t show which roads are one way only, unless you are looking at the 3” to 1-mile scale of city centres.

Since this is the 2003 version, you will need to buy a newer one if you are bothered about the speed cameras, but if like me you just want a quick way to get home from work, then this is perfect.

There are parking icons to show you where parking is located, but it does not tell you the name of the car park, how much it charges, whether it is multi storey, or whether it is open 24-hours. Regardless, this is very useful If you are in a town centre with nothing but yellow lines around. With regards to parking bays and "boxes", this thing does not show ones on roads with or without meters.

>> ESSEX IS HUGE! You cant live without it! <<:

Seriously, this is perfect, very detailed, and at 1inch to the mile, you won’t miss a thing. Essex is quite big, but they have gone into great detail about family activity area’s and centres, and restaurants. They even display where the fuel area’s and lay-by’s are! Excellent stuff, and perfect for those who travel across Essex on a regular basis.

>> OVERALL <<:

I wish this did show the very small country roads, it does show some but not all. Sadly dirt track roads are not displayed because they are not official.

Definitely recommended folks, please rate/comment!
